But, if you wouldn't make that decision in the best interest of the team... then why would the team?
I think business and talent are the very reasons he should be afforded another chance at a roster spot. He was at vet minimum last year prior to his suspension, so he ought to be that once more. With the cap penalty bearing down on us, a healthy playing Tanard Jackson is probably the best cost/value we have access to. His tackling may be a problem, but in general he was definitely starting FS material in Tampa.
I don't think his spot is or should be guaranteed, and we ought to go into pre-season with the safety position dealt with in other manners, either with draft picks or FAs or both (probably both is best), but unless we magically get a 1st round pick or get the cap penalty lifted we are pretty much guaranteed to be thin at safety again this year, and even then, the FA market/draft might not be cooperative. I don't think we can really turn down the opportunity to get a potential starting caliber FS for vet min, provided he gets the thumbs up from Daniels, the league, Morris, Haslett, and Shanahan, and is in shape.
But again, he should be nowhere near the starting spot, and we should have a legitimate backup there as well, before bringing in Jackson.

Re: 2013 Washington Redskins Free Agency Database: Top Targets, Rumors, Signings, and Coaching (Danny Smith is w/ Steelers). OP will be updated. Signed: Futures list on OP; DE Merling signed!; (J. Brown's contract voids on 8 Feb 13, will be a FA)
So Jammal Brown is going to cost us $3 mil plus in dead money and we only save $1 mil - ish. ****, why don't we keep him until 1 June and see if we can save a little bit more money towards this years cap?
This dude took us to the cleaners. That one smarts.

For Dannell Ellerbe fans holding out hope that we sign a ILB:

Albert Breer @AlbertBreer
So based on that from Ozzie, Ed Reed, Dannell Ellerbe and Paul Kruger would be free to hit the open market.

This just in - Tanard Jackson is a terrible tackler, reminds me of Kareem Moore. Some around here need to lower expectations for this guy...
Dustin Keller news -
Jets | Jeff Cumberland could become starter
New York Jets TE Jeff Cumberland could become the starter by default next season because the cap-strapped team isn't expected to keep TE Dustin Keller.
Some competition for O Lineman now -
Jaguars | To use zone blocking scheme
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch plans to install a zone blocking scheme for next season.
Jets | Two FAs unlikely to return
The New York Jets are unlikely to bring back the same cast of wide receivers from last season, clearly the weakest position on the team in 2012. WRs Braylon Edwards and Chaz Schilens are impending free-agents and it is unlikely they return.
Quote from CFL Lineman Jovan Olafioye (Did we sign this guy yet? How about now?)
"It's my blood pressure, but I've got it under control," Olafioye said Tuesday night. "I've been to so many doctors and I've been cleared by them all."

49ers | Isaac Sopoaga hurt by team scheme
Impending free-agent NT Isaac Sopoaga (49ers) becomes less valuable as he hits the market because the San Francisco 49ers play nickel defense so much. Sopoaga managed to play just 31 percent of the team's defensive snaps in 2012.

NFL | Teams eased into free-agent frenzy
Wed, 06 Feb 2013 16:56:54 -0800
Starting this year, the NFL has made a change to the free-agent process, allowing all teams to begin talking with the agents for unrestricted free agents three days before the new league starts at 4:00 p.m. ET Tuesday, March 12. Teams will even be able to enter into negotiations with these players, although nothing can be finalized before March 12.

49ers | Ricky Jean-Francois could leave
San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois could leave this offseason if he is able to receive starter's money from another team.

Because some people will want him...
49ers | Randy Moss not expected to return
San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Randy Moss likely will not re-sign with team this offseason because he did not like his role during the season and likely would not receive a bigger role if he returned. Moss has said he would like another season in the NFL.

49ers | Clark Haggans not expected to return
The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent LB Clark Haggans this offseason.

Why is nobody considering Pat Chung? He is not even on the OP list? Is he not a FA? He has had some injury issues the past few years but he is a playmaker and has ability to play both safety positions. He is young and hits HARD!

We've talked about him before in here. He would certainly be an upgrade and i'd consider him one of the top safeties to pursue as well.

Broncos | Two DTs may test free agency
Wed, 06 Feb 2013 13:38:31 -0800
Denver Broncos impending free-agent DTs Justin Bannan and Kevin Vickerson could test the free-agent market to see what kind of deal they can get from other teams. The Broncos are interested in re-signing both players but likely only to short-term deals.

Because their secondary was horrible last year. Makes me wonder why everyone loves Chris Houston so much?

Don't understand this one. People are saying that he'd only cost $1.1M as a June 1 cut? Can't imagine there's any reason we wouldn't want the $2M in cap space, unless there's nothing we could do about it.

I've also mentioned him before. I think he's certainly on the list of guys to look at. Moreso than some of the names up there. :)

We have something around 4 mill OVER the cap. Even if we restructure a few contracts, what is exactly is that gonna buy us in FA? Definitely not top end talent :whoknows:
We're gonna have to look to the draft to fill holes, which is definitely not a bad thing, the younger we get, the longer our success.

Probably this has been posted in this 100 page thread but: I would think we can give Cooley Vet minimum for a year and let him compete in all the off-season activities. We don't know how Davis will be or if we can resign him. I thought Cooley decent at the OL blocking and if he really wants it who is to say he doesn't come back decent with hard work during the off-season. Anyway CAP damage would be minimum.

No. It hasn't been mentioned much at all. Cooley will probably make his contributions via the broadcast booth this season.

I thought they were going to re-up Pat Chung?
EDIT: Just added him. He is UFA as well.

Always injured. He made plays when he was healthy so its worth a look. Tough to count on somone like him though.
