Default Computer Help: Icons Goofed Up

I just swapped out my 4200 RPM drive in my notebook for a 5400. I love the new drive but after I copied my old drive and installed my new one the icons for my programs and relative files no longer are correct. They just have that "Windows doesn't recognize this file choose a program" look to them. I can click on them and they come up but it just looks ugly.

I had the same problem with a desktop system I put a new hard drive on and I had to reinstall the software.

Does anyone have an easier route?

what program you used to copy from one hd to another? it sounds like the transfer of the dlls or other necessary files weren't copied so the program and the icons don't work. do the programs work?

I used the software that comes with Maxtor drives.

Yes, all programs work. The icons just are missing.

I am not sure if this is a .dll, registry, or profile issue. It may even be a graphics card issue.

You can always right-click on each icon, go to the properties, and change the icon for the .exe (Or whatever it may be in this case).

    You can also this program:

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop...-Changer.shtml

...Or the programs below this one that are in the same category. I'll let you change program icons to whatever you desire.

Also, you can go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...owertoys.mspx, download TweakUI, and see if you can modify using this MS program.

    I hope these help.

I think you have to go redo your file associations. A reinstall of the apps shouldn't be necessary.

When it "choose the program to open this type of file" click the box where it remembers your choice.

Did the file association thing first. No dice.

It was only Office stuff and Photoshop so I just did a repair.

    Thanks for trying though.
