Realistic Draft Trades

In the past few weeks I have seen a lot of speculation on the boards about the skins possibly trading up into the first round or maybe an earlier pick in the second round. The reason the skins are in this situation in the first place is because they have traded away too many draft picks in recent years. Not to say that I am not happy with Lloyd, Campbell, and Cooley, but the team needs to develop more young players for the future.

One possibility which seems a little more realistic to me is the same kind of deal the skins swung 2 years ago with Cooley. We swapped fifth round picks with the saints and traded our 2nd rounder in 2005 for their 3rd rounder in 2004. This is a really deep draft at a lot of positions, especially some of the ones the skins are targeting. If early second round talent somehow falls to the beginning of the third round, I would not be unhappy at all if the skins made some kind of deal. In some mock drafts guys like Max Jean-Gillies, Cedric Griffin, and sometimes even players like Leonard Pope and Thomas Howard have fallen that far. That does not mean this scenario is likely, but not impossible either

I have faith in the coaches ability to evaluate talent, and if they feel like they can get a freak for the right price in the mid rounds, they should pull the trigger. Worked out pretty well with Cooley didn't it?

heh!heh! Yep, what ever they do will be fine with me. I've been real pleased the last 2 years with their selections and the players they got. I'm sure it won't be any different this year. They'll probably pick some players we haven't even mentioned in the early rounds. Coach Gibbs and staff know what their doing.

I agree with this point. I don't see a move into the first round, rather a trade of the later round picks to move into the 3rd or 4th round ala Cooley.

What situation are you referring to? The fact that free agency has netted us a number of YOUNG free agents who have proven their worth at their positions? The biggest difference between our current free agency philosophy and those from the past is that we've gone out and targeted young players with upside vs. older players at the end of their careers (QB is the exception but we addressed that by picking Campbell). We've then used remaining draft picks to add players for depth and development (Campbell and Rogers for instance). Cooley was a welcome exception in that he was able to step right in and be effective from the start. I'm happy that we've addressed our needs (again with young, proven players) and that we can grab a good LB or OL at 53 this year.

By "situation", I am not implying that the skins are in any kind of trouble in terms of their players. What I was talking about is that giving up future first round draft picks will prevent us from getting freaks like sean taylor in the draft. I agree that this year the approach to free agency has been better, and lets face it, most of the 2000 moves were the workings of dan snyder rather than the coaches. I wasn't trying to say the skins are going about things the wrong way, but I really wish the skins had more picks in this draft. If the coaches think there is some unreal deal available, they should definately take it, but id hate to keep having to wait until the second round for the skins to picl

for 2 weeks i have been saying that cedric griffin will fall to the 3rd round. hes a hybrid player who GW would love, and if we got a trade for it we could take a LB with 53. then we use whatever we have left on O-line depth.
in my ideal scenario, we trade something else for that 3rd round pick, but i could definitely see us trading our 2nd rounder for a pair of 3rd rounders
