MMA has too much grappling![]()
The UFC had seven of the top 10 PPV events of 2008, boxing had two. That's all I am saying.
Boxing has plenty of grappling too. They are just standing when they are doing it and it is not supposed to be a part of the sport.
I love MMA, I love boxing. They are different sports. I will say that boxing has a lot of work to do to excite what is a dwindling fan base. I still get fired up for a big boxing match, for me, there is nothing like it. But there are fewer and fewer of those fights and I find myself watching fewer bouts because there are very few I am interested in watching anymore.
Anyways, this is not the Boxing/MMA pissing match thread.
Lots of clinching then breaking up by the ref in boxing and it's just as boring or not more boring than grappling stalemates in MMA.
MMA refs are getting better and better about standing up fights that stall on the ground too.
I used to think grappling was boring too...I liked the old-school UFC's that were just totally out of control. Then I met a wrestler who helped me see the light in regards to grappling, lol.
To me now, it's interesting to watch the guys transitioning through moves to gain a better position against their opponent while their opponent counters and is trying to do the same to them. It's like a high stakes chess match.
I think this wiki entry gives a good overall view...

And I'm not clear on your comment ACW, are you saying you don't like grappling period or that you don't like the grappling that stalls on the ground?
There is no problem with liking boxing more than MMA.
Explaining grappling would take forever. It's intricacies are virtually endless. It's a science, like boxing is. These days, elite grapplers are so loaded with knowledge that you can see every little movement they do is calculated.Originally Posted by ACW

IMO, one reason people like the UFC better is because you're much more likely to see a one punch KO as opposed to boxing where the guys are much more skilled in seeing punches. Another reason is because almost anybody can lose to just about anybody.

Don't take this the wrong way, because it is not a shot at you or boxing. But boxing used to have a lot more PPV fights when there were more marketable fighters. There were a good amount of months a few years ago when Showtime and HBO were both holding PPV fights every month.
Yes, the UFC has one every month, but if boxing could you can be sure that they would.
HBO alone had 10 boxing PPVs in 2006, but I don't know if they will have half of that this year.
