This article is fine as long as you know the audience that Hanson writes for (since he is a syndicated columnist for the neo-conservative National Review).

Can we rename this "AFC's linking problem"?...that would seem to be a more accurate thread title for what is being discussed.

Tehran, Iran, Aug. 02 – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blasted United States policy in the Middle East and warned of an impending Muslim “jihad”, or holy war, against the West. “Today, it is clear for everyone that the aggression against Lebanon was a premeditated U.S.-Zionist action as a key step in the path of dominating the Middle East and the Islamic world”, Khamenei said. His comments were reported in the official news agency IRNA and aired in part on state television on Wednesday.“Today, Muslim nations more than ever despise the U.S.”, he said.

“With its support of the Zionists crimes and criminals and its blatant aggression against the rights of Muslim nations, the U.S. regime must be prepared for a hard slap and a destructive punch by Muslims”, Khamenei said.“The U.S. is following a policy of creating insecurity, crisis, and war in the region”, he said, adding, “It must know that the more it expands insecurity, the more it will arouse the anger of nations against it and make the world insecure for itself”.

Khamenei praised the Lebanese militia Hezbollah for taking part in a “jihad” against the “enemies of Islam”, stating that the group was on the “frontline” of the defence of Muslims.“ The aggressive actions and nature of the U.S. and Israel will revive the spirit of resistance in the Islamic world and will make the value of jihad more prevalent for it”, Khamenei added. “Islamic Iran believes resistance against American bullying and aggression and mischief by Israel to be its duty and will stand alongside all oppressed nations, especially the dear people of Lebanon and the combatant Palestinian nation”, he added.
The reality of the situation is that radical Islam, whether under the name of Hamas, Hezbollah, islamic Jihad, or Al Quaeda considers this to be one big war against the west. In their minds the different attacks are just different fronts in this war.

    Good find, AFC.

It speaks to the heart of the matter. Everything would work well if Iran, Syria, etc. could maintain a stable, free democracy. Problem is, they don't believe in it. For the people in those places, Islam = Law. Democracy is literally against their religion.

The validity of his statements are irrelevent to his audience. If you're going to challenge his opinions, why don't you just do it?

The saddest part is that it could all be settled in a day if everyone involved could sit down and be rational. I have a yemeni friend who has said point blank that until a hugely popular arab figure steps up and says that its wrong to hate jews it will stay the status quo, the problem being that the fastest way to popularity in an arab country is to be the loudest anti semite (funny because all people from the ME are considered semitics.) He also says that to speak out against antisemtisim guarentees that you will be ostracised in your community.
