    Default Identify This Snake Please!

I was in the Outer Banks last week and took the kids crabbing. My son pulled up this snake in his net and scared the hell out of everyone before the snake slithered out of the net. Anyone have any idea what type it is? I know it's not the greatest picture but maybe someone can identify it...

From the shape of the head, kind of looks like a water moccasin.

That looks a lot like a water moccasin (cottonmouth) to me. They are usually found in freshwater, but can also live in saltwater (especially brackish salt/freshwater swampy areas) too.

Thats the only snake that big that I've seen in the water. Shape of the head is right too.

Heres a pic of one for comparison.

That was what was initially suspected by some people that were there...a water moccasin/cottonmouth...aren't they highly poisonous? My son lifted the damn thing over his head in the net and as it was flailing around and I was running towards him it escaped the net...

Edit: It happened to be in the same water in which we were jet skiing a few hours earlier.

Ya know, I was supposed to be in OBX this week and the wife's family bailed. I am so glad that I'm not there, and I don't think I'm going if they have **** like that. I HATE SNAKES !! I had a bad experience in Texas when I lived there -- a water mocassin came after me as I was in a lake. I drowned the bastage but have not been the same.

It is a water moccasin, no doubt. I was bitten by one when I was younger. The son of a ***** actually went after me. They are nasty snakes.

You will find them all over the Eastern Seaboard States. They are really populous from Florida to Virginia, but they usually are found in/near fresh water, swamps, marshes, etc. You don't usually see many in/near salt water, but they can hang out there.

Someone tell me why we don't go around and kill all poisonous snakes?

lol, that was low. Funny but low.

It's the food chain man, you kill them all and next thing you know you have an abundance of something else to worry about. I hate snakes myself.
