Default Iran: Members Of Parliament Try To Impeach Ahmadinejad

Tehran, 9 Jan. (AKI) - Iranian reformist lawmakers have started collecting signatures in Parliament to demand the impeachment of the country's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. So far, 38 signatures have been collected out of the 72 required to formally summon Ahmadinejad and request his impeachment. Noureddin Pirmouzen, a deputy with the reformist minority, says it is nonetheless "positive to question" the head of the executive branch.
"Many actions of the current government and of president Ahmadinejad have led the country to an extremely worrying political and economic situation," Pirmouzen told the Iranian news website Aftab.

Referring to a resolution of the UN Security Council unanimously approved on 23 December which imposes sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear programme, the MP said "it is the last straw which has made Iranians loose their patience." The international community fears Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons and has repeatedly asked the government to halt sensitive nuclear work - a demand ignored by Tehran which claims its programme is solely for civilian use.

"Parliament cannot sit still in front of the current situation and watch as the economy worsens because of the government's inability," he added.

Issa Saharkhiz, editor and political analyst, told Adnkronos International (AKI) that "Ahmadinejad's golden era is over."

"I don't think Ahmadinejad will leave the presidency before his mandate expires but I am also convinced he will not succeed in winning a second term," added Saharkhiz. "Many factions and personalities who supported Ahmadinejad's candidature at the 2005 presidential elections have already abandoned him and don't spare criticism, even harsh and direct, of the president and his government."

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president after an overwhelming victory in June 2005 but his then contender, Ali-Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, and moderate conservative rivals of the president did far better than Ahmadinejad's allies in December polls to elect local councils and the powerful watchdog, the Assembly of Experts.

I am actually surprised by this news. But this is good news. It shows that Ahmadinejad doesn't appear to strike fear in most of parliament.

My only thought is that this might be a smoke screen that diverts attention from nuclear aspirations. "We tried to stop him from building them but we couldn't" type thing.

    Just wondering:

Are folks over there smart enough, politically, to decide that "the Americans won't attack us militarily if they think our President is about to be impeached, because they won't want the Iranian people to rally around a leader in a time of crisis. So if we start impeachment, we can "freeze" the US military for a couple of years"?

I mean, I've seen some really stupid moves, politically, from "over there", for decades. And, granted, you can get paranoid quick if every thing that happens is looked at through "it's part of an evil plot" glasses.

But there's no rule that says they can't wise up, either.

It's the best case scenario and likely the only viable option - change must come from within. There are many Iranians who view the U.S. in a good light and to alienate them - forcing them toward Ahmadinejad in a show of solidarity would be a mistake. But, time is obviously of the essence and I doubt Israel is willing to wait for such an event to occur.

Well, the people over there are pretty much like us. They don't want this guy's rhetoric, and they recognize the path he has put them on.
Not only this action, but their recent elections prove it.

We should realize Iran is not some backwoods country... the people are educated and have a good standard of living.
I am happy for this news, and it's realy not all that surpriseing. Their not a country full of fanatics.
Even the theocracy in power is moderate in it's views of the outside world. Prior to 9-11 there were diplomatic channels being explored between our two nations,, considering our past history together, it's says a lot.

I have faith in the Iranian people. their current leaders are extremists, and this shows even more evidence that they recognize it.

    The economy is in ruin
    unemployment is rampant
Dissenters are being beat and imprisoned daily
he is provoking sanctions by the UN
    Freedoms are being removed constantly

And of course he is leading them to military confrontation

    Why would they complain?

Oh I left out the infrastructure for oil production is crumbling from neglect
and he is giving away hundreds of millions of dollars to other groups

The thing is the Iranian people, especially the youth want and embrace change, however the easiest way to change that kind of progress and direction is to bomb them, and force them all to unite against America...if anything we should do what we were originally going to do with Iraq by Dubya's father....tell the Iranian people to overthrow their government and we will support and back them.

The entire Iranian government structure, Theocracy is extremely unpopular. Basically they got a boost from this President who in attacking in the west in his rhetoric got the west to strike back. This appealed to Iranian nationalism which for a short time masked the domestic problems ( employment, economy, inflation, corruption etc ).

Remember the Iranian population consists of alot of young folk who can not find work. This is only going to get worse in the future...

    Iranian Population 0-16 years: 35%

If we don't saber rattle that entire country would kick the mullah's out on their ear soon enough...
