Default How many records did the Redskins Break between 81-91

I tried a quick search to find this but I'm having a hard time. This question popped into my head based on the HOF snubs. Off the top of my head, I know that Gibbs and the 'skins:

Broke the record for number of points scored in a season
Broke the record for catches in a season
Broke the record for consecutive games with a catch
Broke the record for total receptions by a receiver
Broke the record for longest run in a Superbowl
Broke the record for most points scored in a quarter in a Superbowl

I think there are others, I think there were some yardage ones... might be one about most shutouts in a season (but that's a wild guess)

Anywho, how many records did Gibbs and crew break in the day (doesn't matter to me if the record has been broken after) It is still baffling to me that a team that was this successful four Superbowl appearances in ten years and shattered so many records is only deserving of one guy in the HOF. All the other dynasties have multiple entries. Heck, the Steelers backup long snapper is in.

Broke the SB rushing record TWICE.
In fact - '87 SB broke 3 records
    Doug Williams - Passing Yards
    Ricky Sanders - Receiving Yards
Timmy Smith - Rushing yards (only one still standing. Congrats Mr. Cokehead)

There were actually ALOT more records than that that were broken in the Super Bowl...I forget them all but some are: most yards gained...602...yards in a quarter, yards in a half, TD passes in a quarter, TD passes in a half, biggest comeback ever (10)...points in a quarter, points ina half...the list goes on and on.

Also, Ricky Sanders broke the SB receiving record IN THE FIRST HALF. Mind-blowing.

Also, 83 team broke single season scoring record, which stood all the way up to the '98 Vikings. Even the "Greatest Show on Turf" didn't score as many pts.

I looked that up and we beat the greatest show on turf by 1 point

The one they set that I feel will *never* be broken (and as testimony, I don't believe anyone has come within 10 of it) is turnover margin. The 1983 Redskins were +39. If I recall correctly, no one since has even got to 30. What's possibly more impressive is at one point (before that terribly sloppy last game vs. the Giants where we just gave them the ball like five times in the first half) the Redskins were +43.

To give you an idea of how incredible that is, the Chicago Bears who were excellent at forcing turnovers this year, forced 44 turnovers. The Redskins didn't just match that, they had 43 more takeaways than turnovers. That's the 56-game hitting streak of NFL team records.

But of course, there were no Hall of Famers on that defense... Just a bunch of average guys... We've been shown over and over that there was only 1 Hall of Famer playing for our run, John Riggins....

RIP Blake Fomby... You will be missed... Love you brother. Hope they keep the roof open at Cowboys Stadium so you can still watch them from up there...

Actually you're wrong with the final number. We ended up at +43 in turnover margin (most people in here believe it was +42) which is still an NFL record that may not be broken. The Bears forced 44 TO's. Compare that to +43.

We actually had 4 INT's and 1 fumble lost against the NYG in that last game and they had 1 INT and 3 fumbles lost, so we were only -1. We still won 31-22.

I just added the numbers up using the boxscores at that database you linked to, and the final number is +42. Interestingly, the only games where we had a negative turnover ratio, against Dallas in the opener and the Raiders in the Super Bowl, we lost. Including playoffs, we were +45 in turnover margin

The game by game numbers, with year-to-date totals in parentheses:

    1. -1 (-1)
    2. +2 (+1)
    3. +1 (+2)
    4. +2 (+4)
    5. +5 (+9)
    6. +4 (+13)
    7. Even (+13)
    8. +2 (+15)
    9. +7 (+22)
    10. +3 (+25)
    11. +3 (+28)
    12. +3 (+31)
    13. +3 (+34)
    14. +5 (+39)
    15. +3 (+42)
    16. Even (+42)

    Playoffs:
    17. +3 (+45)
    18. +1 (+46)
    19. -1 (+45)

I always knew the number as +43. Here is the story in the Redskins website that says it:

Funny that you used the database that I gave you and they were wrong . I know in my heart we were +43. I'll try to research it more. You were very diligent in looking it up game by game.

I can't believe I forgot that one, radagast. I knew Sanders had a heck of a day, but I didn't realize he was the most successful receiver at one point. I do remember after that season, they talked about the Redskins having no starters, but that Sanders was a third equal (although that never quite panned out. He was always the third receiver)
