Star Trek: TOS Remastered!

I just found out that the original Star Trek is being remastered with updated special effects and music.

I'm watching the "Doomsday Machine" right now. I'm impressed and very excited about this...can't wait for more!!!!

The look and feel of the sets has not been changed, so far what I've seen is exterior FX being updated. Really Reaalllyy cool stuff.

I don't really feel like hunting around for the things on broadcast, since I can already tell that I'll be shelling out big bucks the day they come out on DVD, anyway.

(But I do wish they'd get off the can and release the DVDs soon.)

Frankly, the recent Treks are much better quality than the original series. I'll take TNG, DS9, and even Voyager over TOS.

BTW, I saw a movie poster somewhere (I forget it it was in person or online) for another movie they're doing. Just that symbol of the Federation and the year 2008.

Technology, better FX skills, and BUDGET played a big part in the TOS FX.

The entire one episode budget for TOS was $186,000. That was the budget for about 30 seconds of a TNG episode.

The remastering of the TOS series is taking care of a lot of that. I was very impressed by what I saw on TV last night!

I can't wait for more.

Ehhh, I'd agree that even though the original had the best characters, once it got past its horrible first year, TNG ended up the best of the group.
None of the others hold up in comparison, though. DS9 had 3 awful episodes for every great one. Neelix pretty much ruined Voyager. Enterprise was barely starting to emerge from its dreadful beginnings to look like it might turn out ok, but then they cancelled it. Personally, I really wish they'd done the Captain Sulu spinoff that they were talking about after he did a guest appearance on Voyager. If they'd just gotten better writers and casting directors than the ones that plagued the last couple series, it could've been great.

DS9 was great trek. My fav episode of all time is "In the Pale Moonlight". GREAT performances in that masterpiece of an episode. Seasons 3-7 were VERY strong. I don't see the degrade in quality at all.

I have to say, that I think DS9 had some great stories, the acting was superb, and the directing was above par. but for some reason, the series never took off with me.

I didn't like the uniforms.
I didn't like the space station
I didn't like most of the characters, except Dr. Bashir, and sometimes Garak. None of the rest of the characters was my cup of tea.

I agree on this one.

DS9 took some time to get going but once it did, WOW. And not ALL of it was just the DOminion War story arc. They had some very nice eps focused just on the characters and their relationships.

Like any series, it had some terrible individual episodes but that can be said about any of the series. In some ways, the DS9 is more the "Western in space" than TNG was, which was often more interested in talking or teching us to death.

My favorite is when everyone gets upset when that one scientist destroys the Crystalline Entity that had obliterated the life on dozens of worlds (including her son.)

Picard was trying to communicate with it, so that maybe they could find an alternative means of providing it with sustenance. Yeah, RIGHT.

That said, I do think TNG was one of the best shows ever on TV.

Oh, I think my favorite episode of all of the series was a Voyager episode Tuvix.

Because of a transporter malfunction, Tuvok and Nelix are merged into a single body. The episode's "puzzle" is figuring out how to separate them. But the drama is the decision on whether they should be separated. Seems the new, unified, life form, who calls himself Tuvix, doesn't want to be seperated. Janeway eventually decides to order their separation, without their consent.

I really liked the drama. (To me, the best moments in Trek aren't when they're deciding how to overpower some enemy, it's when they have the ability to interfere, but they don't know if it's right.)

My biggest complaint with the episode is that I don't think they made the decision agonizing enough. Yeah, Janeway pointed out to Tuvix that, for example, Tuvok has a wife and kids on Vulcan.

But I think when Tuvix was appealing Janeway's decision to force him to undergo the procedure without his consent, there were some points that needed to be made, but weren't.

The speech I would've written for Tuvix:

(FWIW, the main basis Janeway cited for her decision was her opinion that, if Tuvok and Neelix had known the transporter was going to merge them, then neither would have volunteered for the merging.)

"Yes, Captain, I'd agree. Neither Tuvok nor Neelix would have volunteered to be merged. However, now that it's happened, both of us have gained new knowledge and perspective. Tuvok now knows what Telaxia is like, and what it was like to first meet Kes. Neelix now understands what it's like to be mentally bonded with a wife, and with their children.

"Both of us have grown, as a result of this accident. And, frankly, growth is the reason both of us chose to be explorers in the first place. The growth wasn't in a direction we would have chosen, but life, and learning, are like that.

"And there's a second factor I would like you to consider, Captain. I now posess, as near as I can tell, all of the memories and experiences of both Tuvok and Neelix. It certainly seems logical to believe that, if we are separated, we both will still remember at least parts of our merged experience set.

"This means that, while before the merge, Neelix did not know what it was like to be bonded to a mate, after the separation, he will. Your procedure will not yield two people who were never merged (and don't want to be). It will yield two people who have been merged, and who preferred that state. (Unless you chose to assume that your procedure will not only seperate me, but will destroy all of the shared memories and experiences that I now contain.)

"If your procedure succeeds, Neelix will, for the rest of his life, remember what it is like to have melded minds, but he will be denied the ability to do so, himself. He will remember that he once had that ability, but does so no longer.

"And, if your procedure succeeds, both of the separated life forms, will also remember standing in your ready room, literally pleading for their life, and being denied.

"When Tuvok and Neelix stepped into that transporter, neither knew that they were about to be merged. Neither was asked for permission. (And I agree with you that, if they had been asked, they would not have consented.) But we do know (or at least, we think) what the results of this procedure will be, and both of us are refusing to consent. The merge was a non-consensual accident. The separation will be deliberately non-consensual.

(Yeah, I like melodrama.)

Just watched the remastered version of The Tholian Web on local t.v. . Needless to say, I liked it. The improvements to the special effects are nicely done. It's the little things in life I guess.
