NFL Redskins Sign CB David Macklin

Skins signs CB David Macklin from the Cardinals. Good pick up.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2827391

    CB David Macklin
    Born: July 14, 1978
    Newport News, VA

    Height: 5-10
    Weight: 206 lbs.
    Age: 28
    Pos: CB

    Experience: 7 years
    College: Penn State

    ESPN Insider:
    Grade 60

Expert's Take: Macklin is extremely competitive and consistent, works hard and plays taller than his listed size. He is tough and aggressive and can high-point the ball. He has very quick feet, plays under control and has good short-area skills which are suited for a cover 2 scheme. He shows decent cover instincts and understands route concepts and makes good decisions from off coverage, and can squat and close quickly against three-step drops. Macklin is also not afraid to make contact in run support, though he lacks quality size. He struggles with consistency in tackling and coverage, though, and there is some disappointment that a veteran player like Macklin is often caught out of position and loses his man in coverage. He has shown the ability to cover but something is still lacking there. He would be a good backup on a team and that may be where his level of play is best suited. Macklin still has good quickness in his game and can contribute on special teams due to athletic ability, and while he possesses all the tools and ability to be a quality corner, but has not made plays with consistency.

Exclamation Gibbs lures ex-Cards CB Macklin

    This is per ESPN.com:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2827391

"Sometimes the voice of Joe Gibbs can have a great impact.

    Macklin

That had to be the case Thursday when Gibbs, head coach of the Washington Redskins, talked Cardinals cornerback David Macklin into accepting a one-year deal with the Redskins over three other more lucrative deals with other teams. Macklin agreed to a one-year, $760,000 deal on Thursday.

The Chiefs, Eagles and Saints had better financial offers on the table but Macklin agreed to fit within the Redskins cap restraints and accept a deal for the NFL minimum along with the $40,000 signing bonus. The Chiefs were offering him two years of security.

Instead, Mackin, 28, decided to compete against three other veteran Redskins cornerbacks for playing time. Macklin had seven starts last season for the Cardinals and played 41 percent of the defensive plays."

What does everyone think about this one? Think Springs is going somewhere on Draft Day?

I don't know. Any defensive player coming from Arizona can't mean good news....

You mean, we were able to attract a player without rolling out a truckload of money? Who woulda thunk?

Based on last year, you can never find enough depth. Whatever happens to Springs, this new guy is welcome.

If you are Shawn Springs, this does not bode well for you. We are trying to stockpile the CBs, which means I agree with you. I don't think Springs will be here next year, he might be part of a trade (please not up to get CJ!).

Competition for the #4 spot, or possible camp fodder.
