Portis, Samuels defend Vick, ridicule dog fighting as crime


NORFOLK, Va. -- Washington Redskins players Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels defended Michael Vick on Monday by ridiculing the notion that dog fighting is considered a crime.

In an interview with WAVY-TV, Portis said that if the Atlanta Falcons quarterback is charged and convicted of being involved in a dog fighting operation, then authorities would be "putting him behind bars for no reason."

"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not," Portis said. "But it's his property; it's his dogs. If that's what he wants to do, do it."

Portis said dog fighting is a "prevalent" part of life.

Portis, a native of Laurel, Mississippi, added: "I know a lot of back roads that got a dog fight if you want to go see it. But they're not bothering those people because those people are not big names. I'm sure there's some police got some dogs that are fighting them, some judges got dogs and everything else."

"Politicians," added Samuels, who found it hard to keep from giggling while Portis was talking.

They really stretched to include Samuels in with Portis on that one.

But the fact of the matter is, it is no big deal that Portis thinks it is no big deal that Vick had dog fights.

Yeah, he made a dumb comment about people doing things behind closed doors - but his point was that he could have been doing much worse things in public, like for instance Pacman Jones.

Also, as I've said in other threads, dog fighting is just as normal as horse racing or greyhound racing in some parts of the country, both of which are also animal cruelty - he explicitly said where he grew up it was a prevalent part of life. This would explain his indifferent nature.

Can't believe people actually took his comments to heart. Uh, everyone has their opinions and these are his. It doesn't bother me the least bit that he said it. Shouldn't bother any one else either.

They're getting more. I've seen more on CP "endorsing" and "ridiculing" dog fighting than on Vick allowing it in his house. Before we know it, Portis is going to be charged while Vick walks away free.

And some people on this board will say that was the right thing to have happened.

Wow. I was hoping this was over. The more detail it goes into, the worse he looks.

Obviously what Vick is accused of is worse if proven true.

However, at least Vick was smart enough to distance himself immediately, and to say that dog fighting is ignorant.

Clinton doesn't even seem to realize that. In one way, this is even more pathetic.

And to the brain surgeons who didn't think he was originally condoning it, I don't believe that is any longer in question.

Portis messed up here. This is a sick-minded crime. Needs to focus on his tendonitis and not on the Atlanta Falcons QB. Just say, "It's unfortunate." Very simple, CP.

i dont gey why everybody is makin sucha big fukin story out of this, there "dogs" theyre "animals" its part of their life to fight.. i for one enjoy seeing dogfights.. instead of us worrying about some dogs fiighting we can focus more on thousands of iraqis dying every month!

On a totally unrelated note, just personally speaking, this topic will attract a wide range of perspective even in disapproval, and while I am one who does care about dying iraquis (not exclusively), I also think your liking of dog fighting makes it hard for me to imagine how you don't totally suck.
