Default Help with old Redskins newspapers... please!

I was just looking through my collection of Washington Post Sports sections and I came to the "5 in a row or we don't go" section of 2005. I thought to myself wouldn't it just be great if I could get my hands on the Washington Post or any other newspaper back from when the Redskins won the Superbowl (Yes I said Redskins and Superbowl in the same sentence, please don't turn off the internets) in 91? I know that it very well may be an impossible request but if anyone knows anything please do tell. When the Redskins do win the superbowl again I will be saving all sorts of stuff from around the time.

Oh yeah, lets take it back for a little while.

I am so jealous! Yeah the day after the victory is actually what I meant to say. Could you post a scan or take a picture (that is if its not locked in a vault somewhere)

You can go to a local library or better yet a college library and use the microfilm archives. Microfilms are little tapes that you put in a viewing machine and scroll through, seeing the original document in its entirety. Most decent libraries have a collection of many newspapers (WP, Baltimore Sun, NYTimes, etc) on microfilm dating back to the 1920's and 30's, and perhaps earlier. You can go back and read about any moment in Redskins history. I did it all the time in college

It was definitely a wonderful time and I can't wait to experience something else like it. Its really amazing the effect football can have on people.

Thank you Tpaskin and I hear you about Clinton and the Post/Times. Certain things you just want to be perfect. Hopefully there is nothing to taint it next time, and yes I firmly believe in next time. As for me and the newspaper, thank you, you're suggestion was right on and I don't know why I didn't think of it. Although its not exactly the same, I have already found one of the stories preserved online. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv...rt/92sbowl.htm
I will look into the microfilm.

And thank you Redlight, I knew that if I asked here I would receive help. I might be super duper extremely biased but I think we have the best football board dedicated to a specific team. And I will definitely check out the microfilms of the newspapers. I did not that they were stored like that although now it does make sense. Come to think of it there are some others things I'd like to check out as well. Thanks for all the help.

I have the Post from after SB26 and the Washington Times after SB22.

I also have the Washington Post sports section from the day of SB18 January 22, 1984.

The Skins were being crowned as one of the greatest teams of all time, all they had to do is beat those friggin Raiders.

And we got both types of victories, the heartbreaker and the beatdown.

It seems like quite a few of you Extremeskins have these historic newspapers. I'll have my day eventually. And in my helpless Redskins heart the Redskins are the greatest team of all time.

BTW; the books Season of Respect, The Impossible Dream, Redskins: Team of the 80s and That Super Season all reprint articles from the Super Bowl seasons. I can't remember if they show a picture of the actual paper for the Super Bowl win though. They may not exactly what you are looking for but they are interesting. You can often find them in www.bn.com under used books.
Another great idea, I saw the Maryland paper and thanks for the link. I'll take a look. When the Redskins win again I might just have to buy a whole bunch of different newspapers

Thats great, everyone here is so good and I'm sure those Wheaties will never get eaten ever. And by your location I'm not quite sure but does the translated version equate to born in Maryland?

Thanks, Yeah when I wrote this thread I was fully prepared for it to be impossible but people here have really opened my eyes.

One thing though is sometimes the older articles won't show the picture [it'll say blocked due to copyright] Sometimes it will show the picture. You do have to pay per each article you want to download but you could get copies of the WP articles from the '83 SB win this way.

Thanks for the ideas. The Washington Post website is a lot more extensive than I previously thought. And yeah $45 is a tad bit expensive but at least I know that the service is available now.

Yeah its crazy the way the vaule of things increases with time. Back in the day you could probably find several Washington newspapers on the ground and getting blown around by the wind. Back then to many they weren't worth much to many people but can you imagine if you went outside and you saw $45 on the ground and flying around?

    Thanks again everybody.

one more thing...i checked www.bn.com and both the Season of Respect [which accumulated articles from the 1982 Super Bowl season and Team of the Eighties [the 1987 season] are both available for about $12.00 each. Both are really great and worth it in my opinion. They just reprint articles [and pictures]...so you follow the season as it was written about as it happened, not what someone wrote about in retrospect...so you see how little respect the Redskins got in the 1982 preseason.
