WASHINGTON REDSKINS SIGN WR KEENAN MCCARDELL

Ashburn, VA – The Washington Redskins announce today that they have signed wide receiver Keenan McCardell.

McCardell (6-1, 188) is a 15-year NFL veteran that ranks ninth all-time in receptions with 861 catches for 11,117 yards and 62 touchdowns. Originally selected out of UNLV by Washington in the 12th round of the 1991 NFL Draft, McCardell received a Super Bowl XXVI ring while spending his first NFL season on the Redskins injured reserve list.

He went to Cleveland in 1992 and played four seasons with the Browns before moving on to Jacksonville, where he would become one of the game’s premiere receivers over the next six seasons (1996-2001). He still ranks second in Jaguars team history with 499 receptions for 6,393 yards and 30 touchdowns.

McCardell then spent two seasons in Tampa Bay, including the Buccaneers 2002 Super Bowl XXXVII Championship season, before moving on to San Diego. He spent the past three NFL seasons with the Chargers appearing in 37 games over that span. Last season McCardell played in 14 games with 11 starts and caught 36 passes for 437 yards. A free agent this past off-season, he signed with Houston prior to the start of training camp but was released prior to the start of the regular season.

McCardell will wear jersey #80.

In addition, the Redskins announce that they have released S Omar Stoutmire.

Well, we can use the help, especially if Moss is going to be out for any significant length of time. I would have been happier with this announcement 5-6 years ago then today. Even Jerry Rice was slowing down by age 37.

I think you are going to see McCardell on the field sooner rather than later given Moss' injury. With Thrash a special teams player now at 33 and Lloyd personna non grata the team is going to need a receiver to join ARE.

The hope here is that he can come in, run the slants and other short/intermediate stuff that gives Campbell an additional safety valve in tough times to go with Cooley.

Clearly the other Redskins receivers, Moss and ARE, are outside players.

McCardell is the first guy we have had in awhile that made his living going over the middle.

I played with McCardell at UNLV. All I can tell you is that he is a grade "A" top notch person. He was one of the most respected and liked guys on the team. He will be a good locker room presence and may even be able to turn Lloyd around.

IR is season ending.

Moss could only miss 3 or 4 games.
