Fun Thread - Little known, or forgotten facts, about Redskins and their players

Time to lighten the mood.



One of the things I LOVE about this forum is how much each poster seems to remember. Little facts and tidbits about the Redskins and former players always amazes me. Some of the facts make me remember things and think back to how it use to me (Like Jeri White holding out in 83 to be replaced by DG at corner). Other things are stuff I never new.



Anyway - Thought it might be a good thread to just post random facts and tidbits you remember about Skins. For example -



1) 1984 - Joe Theisman leaving his wife for Kathy Lee Crosby, host of "That's incredible. For those younger that don't realize what that was like, it would be like Payton Manning announcing that he is leaving his wife To Marry Katie Couric



2) In 1987 - While during the season the QB controversy was between Jay Schreador and Doug Williams - Before the season started, the big controversy was for 2nd string between Doug Williams and Babe Laufenberg. I remember Many wanted Babe to play! Babe use to be the golden boy of preseason. He had like 6 4 qtr comebacks in 4 years of preseason games.



3) Guys remember what happened to Albert Connell? Came to the skins in 97, started by 98, in 1999 he exploded to catch for over 1100 yards.

In 2000 he had a off year and when Marty came in 2001, he was a free agent who was going to make some big $$. He signed with New Orleans for 14 million. He failed to do anything and in the middle of the season was caught stealling $4000 out of Deuce McAllisters locker!



4)The biggest comeback that never was - Any one remember the 1998 Cardinals vs Redskins game? Different season, different outcome, might be considered one of the greatest games to watch. 5-5 Cards vs the 2 -8 Skins. Skins actually had thought they had a good team that year, then lost their first 7 games. but after the bye, game back and beat the Giants, lost to the cards by 2, and crushed Phili. Against the Cards they QUICKLY fell to a 31-0 deficit. Skins finally scored at the end of the half and missed the extra point to cut it to 31-6.



Late in the 3rd, it was 38-13 when the skins came storming back behind....Trent Green. Closed the game to 38 to 35. Cards then scored again, skins wasted no time to close the game once again to 45 to 42 with 2 mins left. Onside kick failed, but the skins STILL got the ball back with about a min left - But couldn't get in FG range.....



Fun game to watch.....

Doug Williams had a root canal on his tooth between the NFC Championship game and the SB.

Charles Mann's wife went into labor the day before one of our home games and he wore the hospital bracelet all during the game and got a sack for each one of his kids. (3 I think)

Russ Grimm played most of the 1983 season on a fractured leg.

How about Riggins smuggling booze into a playoff game and getting bombed by the 4th quarter? He knew it would be a blowout and he'd only play the first half so he planned ahead.

I do remember the White house dinner. Riggins there at the Reagn white house, Sandra Day O'conner - Riggins leans back and screams out "Loosen up Sandy Baby!" then falls over and passes out.

He said it himself on one of the radio shows. I'm thinking it was the 1983 season, 51-7 win over the Rams in the divisional round.

There used to be a show on called Redskins Sidelines with Sonny and Glenn Brenner where they had players as guests. I'll never forget when they asked a young Dexter Manley what he thought of the Cowboys. He smiled and said, "Dallas sucks to me". His grammer was a little off but we all got the point and my Dad still says it whenever we play the pukes I think Dexter named his daughter Dallis a few years later...go figure.

Don't remember who had the hit, but I remember seeing Jake the Snake's finger broken and lodged in the face mask of a Skins defender. Couldn't get the finger out till whoever it was took the helmet off. May have been Sean Barber...........

Dexter was never great with the quotes....I remember when he said "he was going to ring Danny White's clock"

A great little piece of facts about Billy Kilmer...the first Skins QB I watched as a young kid..

In 1960, he led the nation in total offense at UCLA and was a first round pick of the 49ers, who made him the starting QB in their innovative shotgun offense. After breaking his leg in 1962, he became John Brodie’s backup until he earned a starting job with the expansion New Orleans Saints, which he held until the arrival of Archie Manning. He was noted for his on-field leadership, who went on to alternate with Sonny Jurgenson and later Joe Theisman as the Redskins’ starting QB until his retirement after the 1978 season.

He had 2 kids. Wore the bracelet and made a shout out on the NFL Films sayin "Baby Cameron, born today, 6:46." I believe he went on to say something along the lines of he had already had a sack, needed 1 more, he had 2 kids, then said "after that, i'm through"
