Default NYT: Venezuela Hands Narrow Defeat to Chavez Plan

    Another socialist leader gone wrong.

At least the Venezuelan people seem to be coming to their senses - if he had won this election he would have been the President for life.

...and I always wondered 'why can't he stay dead?' It doesn't change any good thing that he said. What matters is his life and not how he died. Why can't he just be a nice Jewish guy? - Tommy Womack

I would say at least Chavez has not done the typical strongman move and falsified the election, or thrown out the results.

    ...yet.

Socialism can't work for the long-term as long as greed exists.

Did you notice the referendum would've changed the standard workday in Venezuela from 8 to 6 hours? An incentive to vote yes perhaps?

Better social security also (supposedly). But he is falling into the same trap all socialist/communist fall into - they get into power and then can't relinquish it. Someone once said something about absolute power corrupting absolutely, they weren't wrong.

I hope Chavez stays in power, as long as he is the only one stopping the NAU and the Amero, atleast according to Fox. I wonder if he is more concerned about keeping the power from his people or his people from us.

That's all well and good - but eliminating term limits in any country is a scary proposition.

I'm sure we haven't seen the end of this plan. He still has many years to get it passed.

True, but term limits seem to be just a small hurdle anymore. Not every country is a constitutional republic like we used to be, not even a democracy. I don't want to drink a beer with Chavez, but I do think he is trying to keep his country headed in the correct direction.

Kind of makes you wonder if he threw the election on purpose. Makes him look more legit - plus he only lost by 2%, so he can lose the election without losing much face.

I am glad the people decided not to give this guy that kind of power.

Yeah, as opposed to us, who have already given 2/3 of those "powers" to our president. We just havn't eliminated term limits, we just keep making people hand the torch to others within the CFR. Ahhh, illusions.
