    That is a great letter.

As a father of a child with Downs - everytime I hear or read about someone using the word, it just stings. I have family members who still use it, so there is a long way to go.
In all honesty, I used the word in the past before I was blessed with my boy. The author of the letter is right - if people could see how hard my son and others with challenges work every day, people would never use that word in a deragatory way again.
Nothing is easy for him but he tries so damn hard... DS kids are really special, as are others.

As for Ms. Coulter, I dont know if she needs to apologize as much as disappear. She, Maher, Maddow, Limbaugh, etc... they are just nasty people who really ruin the political discourse.

It was absolutely stupid, but i can't say i havent used the term before and i have a cousin with downs. But Dan T....your reply to my post pretty much is indicative of the democratic party, liberals in general: arrogant and dismissive. I ask a "fairly" relevant question and u laugh it off. I am done here, arguing politics is just useless.

Agreed...but I do wonder what Rachel Maddow has done to reach the levels of Coulter, Limbaugh, and and Maher?

Your post was partisan hackery. In it you called the President a liar and a moron. It deserves a dismissive response. There's nothing arrogant about that.

You feeling insecure that her hands will make you feel um, inadequate

I`ve seen photos where I believe she is very attractive. I`ve also seen pictures of her where she looks like a horse. She`s the type of girl you only hang out with in the right lighting.

Coulter's just out for ratings / money and has no shame or line over which she won't step. Best way to combat her is to not pay her any attention; don't talk about her, don't watch her. That's all you can do.

    ****, I'm talking about her.

I am so fed up with his zingers and one liners. Regardless of your opinion on Romney, the support for this president and the accountability ppl demand from him is shocking. I want to know why this prez slept when our ppl were being attacked, Is he lying now, or was he lying 4 weeks ago? Thank God this will all be over soon. And for the record...a few more pounds and ann would look pretty good!

Oh but how will we ever survive without your thoughtful input?

And yes, that was arrogant and dismissive.

Hard to believe a thread about Ann Coulter could sink to nothing but name calling and offensive slurs.

I have a retarded uncle (mentally challenged or something, we called him retarded) who is also pretty deaf. I never thought twice about the word.

I have a good friend and she has three disabled kids and explained to me why the term moron or retard is offensive to her. I tried to stop using it and made everybody at the bar do the same when I worked.

Seems to me that listening to the people the word is aimed at and taking their thoughts on it into consideration is being a decent person, not kowtowing towards the mentally disabled (although there's nothing wrong with that) and certainly not arrogant and dismissive of anybody.

Of course you have to put it in context. Plenty of pediatricians I have worked with have used the term mentally retarded, but they use it as a medical term. What Ann Coulter was to use the word as an insult. By trying to insult the President, she implied that being mentally retarded is beneath being a non-mentally retarded person, and hence she insulted those people as well.

She's, like 50, and I'm pretty sure she injects herself with urine.
