    Default It isn't fair!!!!!

    Well, what is? Recently, there has been a spate of whining by people that others are getting huge unfair advantages. It's not fair that they get tickets when caught speeding. It's not fair that they might have to pay higher taxes to support a war they support. It's not fair that soon there will be no analog tv signal. It's not fair that Bellichick gets a slap on the wrist. It's not fair that prisoners in Gitmo don't have any rights. It's not fair that refs don't tell me which game they're betting on and on whom.

    So, my question is what is fair or what do you demand to be fair?

    I actually expect the mods here to be fair and find that they really are. I think bannings and thread closings are really minimal and they extend give people a lot of rope to hang themselves.

    I expect and demand educators be fair and try to eliminate testing and grading bias as much as possible. Teachers are bound to like some students more, but to try to control that.

    I expect my food at TGIF's to be at best fair. It's rarely good, but it usually manages fair.

    I don't know, I think I might enjoy them doing more of this Especially the thread closing part.

    You see I hear a call for random musings... and then all the grinches and thread ogres come out...

    I tell ya, it's just not fair.

    I will tell you that I think that fair is rarely fair. For example, I think it is fair that some disabled kids get handicapped ramps, special parking places, and more time on tests or other accomodations that other kids do not. Fairness can be imbalanced. I do think that giving abled kids (15 and under) calculators is a huge mistake, but allowing kids with a math disability to use a calculator is wise.

    I agree with this. Perhaps I would enjoy TGIF's more if I didn't expect my food to be good......

    The SAT isn't fair, you have to know math and the meaning of words.

    Outsourcing isn't fair, you should be able to make $40 per hour telling me how to install my wireless router.

    wow dude, I get ranting and all but now you are ranting against handicapped people because they get parking and longer on tests? Im sure that every single one of them would give up their handicap if all it meant was they had to walk from further away.

    Whoops. Let me try again, Mike.

    Fairness is generally construed as equality or everyone having the same thing.

    I'm saying here that fairness doesn't have to be that way. In fact, it is fair for some groups to have things others don't (IE ramps, accomodations, etc.)

    So, some things that are fair would be by definition unfair which is where the confusion comes in with things like Affirmative Action or the Individuals with Disabilities Act. You have no idea how many times I heard the parents of kids in Gifted and AP programs whine that it wasn't fair that their Johnny wasn't allowed to take an untimed test and actually pettitioned to have their kid tested and declared "disabled" so they could score better.

    My oldest kid now has a math inability because she's been allowed to use a calculator for everything. I remember even in college I wasn't allowed to use a calculator in higher math classes for tests [pre-graphing calcs]. And since I wasn't good in the subject to begin with, it was a painful journey.

    I think that's going to be more and more the case. There is a lot of value in actually doing the work. You get a feel for what the answer should look like. Unrelated, but the same issue. Since I started using a cell phone, I no longer memorize phone numbers and when I need to give someone a number and don't have my phone on me I'm often at a loss.

    I complain about my job the most. So here it goes..

    Unfair = Under 10% tip.
    Fair = 15% tip.
    Great = 20% and above tip.
