'Bacontrepreneurs' Building Bacon Empire
From Bacon Salt to Baconaise, Bacon-Lovers Catapult 'Uber-Meat' into $1.4 Million Business
BY NEAL KARLINSKY
April 21, 2009
Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow have re-invented what it means to be entrepreneurs. The self-proclaimed "bacontrepreneurs" have catapulted their love of bacon into a successful business.
"Everything should taste like bacon; that's the motto," Esch told ABC News.
Their business began as a joke over drinks. During a lively discussion with friends about their common passion for bacon, the idea for Bacon Salt, a product mixing their two favorite flavors, was born.
The duo, who both had successful jobs at a technology company in Seattle, quit and began experimenting with different flavors of Bacon Salt.
"We took a bunch of bacon and poured in salt," Esch, 30, said. "Turns out that's disgusting."
Once the recipe was perfected, Esch and Lefkow, 35, introduced Bacon Salt, and hickory and peppered varieties, to the market last year.
With five employees and no marketing budget, they stormed sporting events coast to coast dressed as bacon and created buzz on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
"When we launched it out of my garage in Issaquah, in suburban Seattle, we had 800 orders in the first week, with no promotion, [from] 12 countries, 25 states," Esch said. "We ran out of Bacon Salt within six days."
Within a year, their products have made it to the shelves of major grocery stores around the country and are sold around the world. And despite the nation's deep recession, the fun-loving startup keeps bringing home the bacon, raking in $1.4 million last year in profits.

Bacon Cupcakes, Bacon Cake? Why Not?
Creative Ways to Get Bacon Into, Well, Anything
By CLEOPATRA ANDREADIS
March 30, 2009
When it comes to bringing home the bacon, literally, that is, Americans are near-professionals. Last year Americans ate more than $2 billion worth of bacon.
Lisa Haas, a "baconographer," told "Good Morning America" the pig product's popularity should not come as a surprise.
"It's inexpensive, it tastes great and you can put it in anything," she said. "People just love it."
But the fact that someone would proudly identify themselves as a baconographer is more telling of the food's current popularity than most anything Haas could say.
As a 2008 report from Salon.com found, popular cookbooks are dedicated just to bacon. People have made clothes dedicated to the fried delight. There's even bacon toilet paper.
Matt Timms is one bacon-lover well aware of the trend. He is the founder of a Brooklyn-based competition called Bacon Takedown in which contestants enter their favorite homemade bacon recipes.
"I just wanted people to enjoy food, to get together and to fight about it," Timms said.
Some of the entries are odd, to say the least. He has seen bacon ice cream, a bacon cake and bacon tamalies.
"Good Morning America" asked its viewers to send in their own homemade bacon concotions. Check them out on the next page, then head here for some more of our delicious recipes.

My love of bacon put to the test by bacon dress
OK, so I am known to love bacon.
I’ve been asked to sample the new bacon vodka. I’ve tried bacon desserts and bacon salt.
I’ve got a T-shirt that says, “Bacon, it’s the candy bar of meats!” A product slogan for which I believe truer words have never been spoken. I don’t know why that’s not on commercials hailing the virtues of bacon.
But then again, what is there to advertise. Unless you have philosophical or religious views against bacon, who doesn’t love it.
And yet, the idea of a dress embellished with bacon — real bacon — makes my stomach a little queasy.
This creation comes from the innovative costume queen Jia Jem
....
A little note, she also added later: The dress made her very attractive to men. Hmmm.
