LOS ANGELES — Brad Pitt has donated $100,000 to fight California's November ballot initiative that would overturn the state Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

It's the first time voters will be asked to ban same-sex marriage in a state where gay couples already have won the right to wed. Same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts and California.

It's the first time voters will be asked to decide the issue in either California or Massachusetts _ the states where gays have won the right to wed.

"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," Pitt said Wednesday.

Trevor Neilson, Pitt's political and philanthropic adviser, told The Associated Press that Pitt was surprised that his colleagues in the entertainment industry had not donated more money to support the battle against Proposition 8.

Earlier in the week, Pitt and Angelina Jolie announced they donated $2 million to help fight HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis in Ethiopia.

To be honest, I can't figure out why the administration has put so much energy into banning gay marriage when we have so many other larger problems to deal with.

    1) It's a great way to make sure their base shows up on election day.

A lot of the people who support discrimination are fanatical about it. A lot of the folks who think it's wrong think there are lots of more important things.

    2) The number of people who support discrimination against gays is shrinking. They want to make sure that, when the day comes that people who support discrimination aren't the majority any more, that it will take a supermajority of people, at every level from city to federal, to overturn the discrimination they've built into society.

Well, good for him. Unfortunetly this article got things wrong. They didn't win the right to wed, they lost and had it overturned by a supreme court ruling.

My quesiton is, people voted this first one into being overwelmingly, what makes anyone think they won't do it again??

Voters have wised up, and become more moral and intelligent? Maybe they've noticed that "Hey, when gays got married, it didn't affect me one bit, so why exactly should I be discriminating against then, again?"

    (I don't believe it, either.)

That's a pretty ugly word- let's try keeping it off the board.

Not calling you out specifically - we all need to do a better job with it.
The soldiers gave three cheers as they urged their tired horses north across the uneven hills. Some of the mounts, exhausted after a week of almost continual marching, began to lag behind; others, spurred on by their enthusiastic riders, began to edge past the regiment's commander. "Boys, hold your horses," Custer cautioned; "there are plenty of them down there for us all."

A little off topic, but I've been spending a ridiculous amount of time in Cali, and more specifically, LA. For such a liberal place, there sure are a TON of Christian rock and Christian talk radio stations. A ton. Just seems odd to me.

A ton? For LA? I think we've got 1 Christian talk, and maybe 1 Christian rock radio, in LA proper... okay maybe 2 rock. But if you travel I-5 North to Sacramento there are a ton in those areas... or so it seems...

The same thing applies to Roe v Wade.

When the ruling is overturned it would mean that Abortion decision reverts to the States and the people would vote and we would see if its a 50% split on the topic or not.
This really didn't answer my question...

This issue should not even be up for voting in the first place... How would we like it, if we wanted to get married to someone, but government has to interfere and vote on it first? We'd be pissed!

Who cares? Let gays get married be miserable like everyone else.
