Default If inexpensive, how would you guys feel about Sproles??(Merged)

Chargers GM A.J. Smith was very noncommittal when asked about the possibility of retaining impending free agent Darren Sproles for 2009.
The sides only had informal talks about an extension during the season and Smith does not view Sproles as more than a situational back/returner. "I have no idea on Darren Sproles," he said. "We would love to have Darren Sproles, and my understanding is he would love to be a Charger. That's a good start." Smith shouldn't hold his breath. No player has the ability to increase his 2009 market value more than Sproles during this postseason.

There are many of us who love what Rock's done for this team, but the truth of the matter is, he is not an elite KR. KR is something this team has lacked for many, many years, and Sproles is the best.

If he can be had for not much money, how would you guys feel about signing him as our KR/Lighting to Clinton's thunder?? That's also something we need to address, since the NFL has shown us over the years that it's imperative to have two nice RBs. I am not taking anything away from Betts, but he is not a homerun threat, neither is Portis anymore. I think a backfield consisting of Portis and Sproles would be one of the best, if not THE best.

And since we do need picks, Betts can join Rogers to grab us 2-3 more picks in the coming draft.

    Thoughts?

What's the definition of "inexpensive"? He should sign for less than Turner did, I would think, but I don't think he qualifies as cheap.

I would like him as a back-up and PR, and I doubt anyone is really gonna sign him to be it's #1 RB. But yeah, getting him and trading Betts makes some sense. I still think you can use Rock as KR, but an upgrade at PR would be good. Sproles only beat Rock by 0.4 yards per return this year, I don't see him as much of an upgrade there.

And say no to trading Rogers.

I'd love Sproles to come here. Kid is amazing!!!

Just when you think you got him wrapped up, he's 20 yards downfield on the way to a TD. Not to mention a beast of a KR.

I honestly had no idea the two were that close, very interesting. I just think Sproles presents more of a homerun threat then Rock, but only if he's inexpensive would it make any sense. I can't count how many times Rock got out in the open and was tackled from behind, something I never see happen to Sproles.

I too think we should keep Rogers, as long as he wants to stay here.

He'd have to be very inexpensive, and I don't think he will be.

We've got way too many other areas to improve on to even think about spending money on a replacement for Rock Cartwright. Sure, we could get better there... but it's just not worth spending the money. We could try undrafted free agents there. We need that kickoff return man who can also be a breakaway threat RB in our backfield.

I haven't seen him play much in the NFL. I used to watch him play when he was at Kansas State. He's a pretty solid player.

Well I think he's been even more impressive than he was with K State, if that's saying anything.

he is very well against tired and slowed down defenses. he is very quick and makes great cuts which is why he is so good on KR but he is not a solid enough back to sign to a RB deal.

To say the least, they compared him to Barry Sanders.

And believe me I know, I drafted him ahead of Reggie Bush in my dynasty league's supplemental draft based on that comparison.

if there is any way to get sproles halfway cheap, we have to get him. I watch a lot of chargers games and have friends who are chargers fans and sproles is an absolute beast. He would be a great backup rb to portis and is the explosive weapon we need to make somethin happen when JC checks down everytime. He could take it to the house on any kickoff return and anytime he touches the ball on offense. He is always the smallest quickest guy on the field and just makes so much out of nothing every time. hes also alot stronger than most people think
