Default Chalk Talk Bonus: FG Percentage Chart UPDATED W/ PUNT CHARTS! (Special Teams STINK!)

I didn't do this to be a sticky, just as kind of a "I was wondering where we ranked in percentage made in terms of field goals, so I made this post to share with the masses"

This will be added to the Sub Forum if TK can pull off his magic, but I don't intend for this to be added to the Read Me's up top, so read it while you can

I'll add the punting chart with this when I get around to it. Had some spare time so went ahead and did this one

    http://dawgvision.blogspot.com/2009/...ercentage.html

    Dead Last. Uhhhh. Ouch.

    Here's the punt charts

Not in last here. By my calculations we're in 29th. World beaters we are!

Who's the little line all the way at the end below everyone else's little line? Hmmm. Dead last. Again. Fix our special teams!

There are three facets of the game. We are pathetic in one of them, meh in another and good in the third. What's the biggest cause for concern here?

Much thanks for taking time to do these types of things. Dead last in field goal percentage? Man that is just HORRIBLE. Imagine if we made a couple key field goals here and there?

Because you can't see numbers there, we are indeed in last in field goal percentage at 72%.

The Lions (The reason why they were in any games at all pretty much) were first with 96%.

The more I look at this the more it bothers me. If we could kick a freakin' field goal we might have been in better position to win some of the games we lost.

I think the chart would be more dramatic if you blew it up so that the range was from 60% to 100% made. However, with that said, I cringed every time we went up for a field goal, no matter if it was a 20 yarder or a 50 yarder. I was surprised when a field goal actually went in. I think that is a sad state to be in when a fan is watching their field goal kicker go out.

Well that should correlate to at least a few points we missed out on. Cool chart.

We missed 10 FGs...if we were perfect, that would have been about 1.875 points per game. Not to mention the field position it cost us. Or our lack of confidence in our FG team probably changed our decision making too in key situations.

    Wow that is quite depressing.

We are, just a BAD football team.

Yeah, absolutely. Excel is screwing with me on this computer, though. I can't make the changes, it reverts to mush for some reason. It's semi-annoying. But I got all the charts to go up the way I have them, and they get the point across, I guess

    Damn.

If we can't get special teams right, just how in the world is this team supposed to win a championship?

I saw we bring Frank Beamer up from VT and pay him a billion dollars to coach our special teams.

The writing was on the wall when we kept guys like Tryon. This was not going to be Joe Gibbs Redskins, where guys would make the team because of Special Teams over rookies.

It's amazing how few people (I've seen ST's mentioned by a few people, to be fair) actually get how big a role Special Team's have been in our losses this season.

I can't find any data for kickoff distance/net yards, but if I did, I bet we'd be hurting in that category as well.

If I had more time I'd do where we ranked in return yards as well, but I really don't. I'm working on a 2008 Season Review and that's crushing my time. Had a few spare minutes today so I did these

This stuff further proves my point that Danny Smith needs to go. And I don't ever really advocate for a coach to be fired, as someone who wants to get in to big time coaching, it would bother me to have people on the internet voice their opinion on firing me. But, I think Danny is a good coach that needs a change in scenery, to be honest.

I wanted to come into this thread and defend Shaun (and I swear I'm not related to the kid ) but I have to admit that at least in terms of other teams, he's been near the bottom of the NFL in terms of percentage these last two years.

I went to look at 07 in hopes of countering KDawg's info on 08 but we were only 20th in 07 (82.9 percent). In 06, Shaun's percentage would have landed him in the top ten (88.9) but of course this was only in 5 games played so it doesn't really count.

I guess my only defense of Shaun is that he is the all time Redskins leader in field goal percentage and was hitting well over 80 percent prior to this year's drop off. Not looking to make excuses but he did have a new holder to start the year (Brooks) and then had to get adjusted to another one in mid year. I think he's young enough and has shown enough talent that I'd be loath to get rid of him now. We've been through so many kickers over the years, I think I'd like the team to practice patience one more year before dumping Suisham.

All that said, I certainly know that I'm in the overwhelming minority when it comes to this sentiment with regards to Suisham.

It's definitely a good thing Zorn has already stated that there will be another kicker brought in training camp to compete with Suisham. He was absolutely horrendous in the second half of the season, after only having a palatable first half. Of course, Zorn did put him in some precarious positions in the second half, given his struggles.

Seems like, with the exception of Khary Campbell and Rock Cartwright, our special teams are atrocious, especially the specialists.

Dont forget, those stats DONT include our return coverage and punt blocking which is horrible.

Danny Smith should be fired, and we need to finally get some good punting/kicking on special teams.

Net includes our return coverage. And we were last in it.
