I was rolling when I saw this last night. Great stuff. The Cheney/Biden bit at the beginning of the show was pretty good too.

Here's the link to the first half of the interview. 5:20 on is the part that was used by The Daily Show. To me, it sounds like pretty much what was said in the "He's Not MY President" thread or whatever it's called.

I didn't see that segment. Was the part where Rush said we have to hope Obama succeeds because he's black taken out of context? And if so, did he bother to mention who told him that?

I couldn't find a clip, but Daily Show had a segment on Fox covering the first day featuring a bunch of devoted coverage to Bush and Bush leaving that was also really funny. It was sort of a "quiet mourning" theme.
"Captain, it's a viewpoint--not one of ours! We're under attack!"

"I see it, ensign! Engage amygdala! Transfer all power from frontal lobes!

Suspend critical thinking field! Go to course heading of reflexive response 101 at full bias!
    Now!'Enter' at will!"

    No doubt.

I've been here for about a year and a half now, and I'm trying to have a very open mind. There are some good things here -- for instance, the suburbs. A LOT of folks who would live in the city in a different metro area take one look at Philly proper and say "Hell no." So you get the city mindset a bit more in the burbs, and to my eye there aren't quite so many oblivious Stepford suburbs. Maybe those two observations are related. I'd like to think so but I have no way to prove it. Either way, it's a very positive trait of the general Philly region.

Positive points notwithstanding, Philly definitely underperforms as a major city. Now that I've entered the suburbs phase of my life, it's not the end of the world. I've had 15 years of life in other, more vibrant cities to tide me over for the next 2 decades or so. But still, it would be nice to have a cultural/power hub nearby to visit without trekking to DC, NYC, Boston, Montreal or beyond.

I guess our family will be making good use of all these airline miles. My little baby daughter already has a second home in Boston, so there's hope.

Anyway, yes. Generally Philly sucks, but I'm naturally an optimist so I see a lot of positives here for families.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress.

I don't see how the Daily Show will stay on the air much longer with no easy targets anymore.

You didn't see the reaction the day Rush made the comments that he wants Obama's policies to fail? A good portion of what I read attributed that desire to him being a racist. Which is totally untrue, but gets to his point that if you don't support Obama some will call you a racist.

The government's figurehead, and control of the legislature for six of the past eight years, has been Republican. What were they supposed to do, make fun of the Democrats' inability to do anything at all?
I agree with you a ittle but think you are missing the biggest point.

Who do you think makes up a vast majority of the Daily Show audience? I would say it is safe to guess that a majority is young liberals and moderates ages 18-35. I am a liberal 25 year old and find it hilarious and try to never miss it. I am pretty much their ideal target audience.

Now, I agree 100% that he goes after all people in government from time to time. I laugh when he makes fun of the Democratic leadership or stupid hippies just as much as when he is making fun of Bush, Chaney, and Fox News.

But you have to be kidding yourself if you think his format will now spend the amount of time making fun of Obama and the Democratic Congress (because they are in power) as they did Republicans.

Why? Because as I said before, it plays completely against its target demographic. His demographic wants to see him poke fun at liberals, and throw in a little funny Dem bashing here and here but I don't think they will want to tune into 30 mins of Obama jokes.

The audience is liberal, the writers are liberal, Jon Stewart is def a liberal person. This formula is not going to make for a satire on the Obama presidency.

That's why I said they will have to be creative. Bush gave them comic GOLD for their demographic. I still expect it to be very funny, I am just interested in how it will go about doing it.

His point also was, apparently, that people only hope for Obama to succeed because he is black and we are all conditioned to root for the black guys. You know, just like he said about Donovan McNabb (rememeber that)?

The idea that people sincerely would hope for Obama to succeed solely because it is good for America when a Presidency is successful is entirely lost on him. Well, no, not lost. Rush knows damn well that is what people are trying to say. But he prefers to twist it into a weird dig against "political correctness" because he knows his target audience eats that crap up.

The Daily Show and Colbert have both been top notch this week. The other night when Samantha Bee did the segment about the frat boy jokes coming to an end, I thought I was going to piss my pants I was laughing so hard.

For those thinking that The Daily Show won't last without Bush to kick around,, you simply don't get it.
Everything is an easy target. For example, watch this funny piece from the Mall on Inauguration Day. Making fun of Messiah worship is sure sticking it to the Republicans, huh?

the Daily Show is funny no matter which side of the aisle you sit on. And now that Obama is in charge, you right wingers will likely enjoy it even more.

I have faith, JP. It will take time to adjust. The previous admin, politics aside, was comedy gold. Now I'm not assuming or implying there won't be a left-side slant, I'm just saying I think they have enough talent and committment to "funny" to stay in the game. If anyone appreciated their skill at comedy as much as whatever political side they seemed to favor, I think they will continue to be pleased. I have been so far, though I see and expect it to take time to get settled with the new players on the stage.

It's called satire. It's not supposed to be taken seriously.

Some of you guys are so uptight that I bet you couldn't pull a piece of dental floss out of your ass with a bulldozer.

    Briliant.

And let's not forget my all-time favorite Daily Show clip. I wouldn't exactly call it kind to liberals.

There was actually a great bit by Lewis Black where he made the case that the Bush administration was putting comics out of business. His premise was that the truth was so funny there was nothing left for him to write.

Anyway, I agree, the Daily Show is just going to rip on whoever's there. They ripped on Clinton, they ripped on Bush, and they are ripping on Obama already. Bush didn't make Stewart/Colbert funny, they're just funny.
