Thread: Purpose of Tags?

    Default Purpose of Tags?

I'm trying to understand the purpose of the tags in the threads. I haven't used the extremeskins.com search function in a while (I normally do a search on google with the "site:extremeskins.com"), but do these tags help with the search?

I was thinking that maybe it'd be nice to be able to, say click on the stars that a thread gets and see what its been tagged. It could save readers the necessity of having to load an entire thread in order to get to these tags.

    Hi again.

Let me start by saying this, which is not specifically mentioned in the Rules although the idea is covered in general:

This new version of vBulletin includes tags. Tags may seem anonymous to members, but the mods can see their author. Do not belittle or insult fellow members or otherwise break any rules within the tag line.[/COLOR]

    Moving on -

The tag system is GREAT! I love it and I think it's a super addition to this new version of vBulletin.

The problem is, most people don't understand how it works. We probably should have put a sticky up to explain it.

The tag system is worthless by itself. It's up to the individual users to make them useful for the membership as a whole. There are a bunch of threads that I have tagged. An example of just two is my jersey thread and my seat thread.

For example, if I wanted to bring up the seat thread, I simply click on search, then I click on the "Tag search" block. I type in

    instant seat info

and shazaam, there's the thread. Quick. Clean. Efficient. And you're not bothered with the dumb one-minute rule between searches.

The thing is, you have to set it up in advance. The tag has to already exist in the tag line in a specific thread. But if you think about it, this is an extremely powerful search tool. For example, anytime you see a thread that has info you deem worthwhile, you could put a tag named

    Thinking Skins

...and it will be there for you to pull up anytime from now until forever. A year from now you can do a tag search on Thinking Skins and a list of all the threads with that tag will pop up for your convenience.

If you see a thread with this icon near where the stars would be:

You can pass your pointer over it and a window will pop up listing all the tags in that specific thread.

    Edit: Here's vBulletin's explanation of tags: http://extremeskins.com/faq.php?faq=...e#faq_vb3_tags

Oh yeah, thats nice. Cause there are some threads that I like to follow and I get frustrated when they fall to page 2 or 3 in Stadium.

Yeah, I think a stickey for this one would be nice.

Yeah, I think most people just use tags to make anonymous comments at the bottom of each thread. Some of them are funny as all hell, but not really what it's there for.

    MTH, this is perfect.

I was just thinking of ways to combine similar threads so that it'd be easier to scroll through them. What I was thinking about was something similar to the read me threads on free agents and the draft, but these tags make it so much easier to go back and forth on all the new threads that are created, especially when there are multiple threads on the same news story.

    Great idea.

For tags, I believe you can set an option in the AdminCP for it to automatically tag the thread by it's title. For example, "If Haynesworth goes to jail, would you fire Cerrato?"

From this option, it would tag most of the words, like "Haynesworth" "jail" "fire" and "Cerrato." So, if this option were on for threads, we could just type in Haynesworth, and have all the threads about Haynesworth come up in the menu.

Not sure if you guys have control over that or not- I know that you guys don't have a lot of power over controls right now, but it's something to look at adding.
