Default A note on "Sign this guy" threads

I notice that they still keep popping up now and then even with FA cooling off and everyone going into draft mode for the next month.

One thing that the fans don't realize right now is that the team still has offers out on some of their existing FA. As of right now, they are still trying to resign Philip Daniels, Khary Campbell, Marcus Washington and Pete Kendall. The fact that they haven't been talking to anyone else tells me that these guys are more important to the teams to sign than any FA available right now, or else they would have given up on some of these guys and moved on to other players. Considering how little cap room the team has, they probably can't afford to sign these guys and any additional draft picks.

Also, with the draft coming up, a lot of the perceived needs of this team could be addressed at that point. So, a player signed now might end up being a useless attatchment later when the picks come in and the need there is addressed, but other needs have come in in the meantime from what wasn't covered in the draft.

So, while it is cool to pick over the leftovers and see who would be decent on this team, the team themselves probably won't do anything until well after the draft when they can better assess what they still need on this team. To be honest, most teams are probably doing the same.

I would be ALL for the Skins re-signing Marcus Washington. He knows the defense and is a great locker room asset. Khary Campbell has been a stand out special teamer and filled in nicely at Linebacker to provide depth. He too has been in the system for a LONG time and is a valuable asset. Re-sign them at all costs over any of the other free agents out there.

    The others...meh.

It is odd that no one has picked him up. Either he's asking for too much money or that hip injury is really keeping him from performing well.

I think its odd as well. At the same time though, its no secret that he's been injured quite a bit over the past several seasons. Must be the $$$

Hopefully he will recognize that, and decide to stay where he's at. You would think its easier for him and his family to stay and accept a lower offer. It sucks that he's going to make FAR less, but that's the business

It is probably a combination of him wanting money and his injury history. While he knows he can come back here for the minimum, he thinks he can get more elsewhere. Meanwhile, Kendall thinks he can still start. While he probably can, good luck to him trying to convince other teams that they should give a mid-30s guy a starting spot.

Who is This Guy? What college did he play for and what position? From what I hear if we sign This Guy (is he related to Ray Guy at all?) he would be the one guy that could turn this team around!

A great post, and something I agree with and mentioned in a thread yesterday. Pretty much all free agent activity will cease in the NFL, as teams focus their attention to the draft and getting private workouts done and all the other preparations for the draft. After the draft and the wave of signing UDFA players, we'll then see a lot of the veterans like Campbell and Washington make up their minds about where they will be playing, because teams will have a better idea on their depth following the draft.

I will say that it won't stop people from making speculation. Just make sure that we aren't creating multiple threads for these guys, so check the stickied free agent and draft threads. Then again, just like all stickies, the people who really need to read this won't.

Really misleading thread title there Longshot. I thought it was going to be an addendum to the official ES rules that any "Sign this guy" thread will also be required to have "Vet min plus incentives" in the OP.

If we don't plan on drafting a linebacker I think we pretty much have to sign Marcus Washington back. We'd be way better off having him on the roster with the chance that he could be healthy than depending on HB Blades or Alfred Fincher to assume the starting role.

Those guys are great depth guys but I don't think either are quality starters. Marcus is a quality starter when he's healthy.

What?! We need to develop Our Guy. Everyone says we need to build through the draft, and now you want to bring in This Guy?! He hasn't even played in our system, you can't say he won't flop.

Here are Our Guys' stats as a starter in games in October from JV through college.

Now get out there and play! (Vet minimum, of course!)
