Default Rank the 3 Major needs (RT, OLB, LDE) in terms of importance to 2009 season

I hope for everyone's sake here, you all realize we will, at best, fill 2 of these 3 needs. Which is why they have to make a tough choice to walk into a year either thin or old at a certain need spot. It's just a matter of which one they think we can walk in and be in decent shape.

I'm gonna say that because of Albert Haynseworth, Andre Carter will have a much better year than last year, because our DT rotation will be pretty solid and we will at least have some experienced run stuffing ends on the other side (Wynn, probly Daniels). We will likely have experience at the LDE spot, if not depth.

However, the outside linebacker position is a rough spot. We have no experienced vets over there and we have little depth. HB cannot be a starter at that spot for 16 games and we can ill afford to have a special teamer (Fincher, Campbell) be asked to be there full time. We gotta get younger there as well. However, in the 2008 season there was little impact from this position, yet we ended the year as the #4 defense in the league. Our cornerbacks and improved DT situation should compensate for any lack of experience/ quality play here (though it still is important).

Lastly, RT is the number 1 need on this team heading into the season because it was probably the biggest point of failure int he final 8 games last season. Heyer is solid, but he cannot be asked to start 16 games. And Jansen has proven to be a regressing player with injury problems. We cannot expect our offense to get any better this year without improved play from WR and our OL. Since we believe we already have the receiving pieces in place to improve, the focus shifts to RT, where there is no solid replacement for Jansen on the roster, and thus, needs to be replaced by a young quality starter.

    So, with that

    1. RT
    2. OLB
    3. LDE

Thoughts (please don't let this be a 'Hi There' thread.....)

Why can't we add players to all three positions?

That's my exact ranking. We definitely need depth at the very least on the Oline. Maybe Jansen can win his job (seems like a stretch), but regardless we need some guys there for the future.

I'd like Washington to come back because he's still good when healthy, and would be worth it if he signs a cheaper contract. We don't have any stellar DEs across from Carter, but our defense has had success without major DE pressure. We will draft someone, but I don't think it's our biggest need.

I could not agree more hopefully they can bring washington back but that is merely a band aid. IF they dont draft a RT with the 13th pick I would be very pissed off!!! what are your thoughts about trading back for more picks? I would still take the T at 13

RT - An actual position that plays all three downs
LDE - More important than SLB because it starts with the trenches
    SLB - Role player position

RT - See Jansen's play as proof. if our o-line isn't improved further our offense will be no better than last season

LDE - the $$$ we paid AH won't make a difference if the ends can't take advantage of one-on-one matchups

SLB - 3rd by default as i think it needs to be significantly upgraded, but not quite as bad as the other two.

I think RT is the biggest hole right now. We have no starting material RT on the roster and I dont believe Jansen found the fountain of youth. Our defense was not the problem last year, our offense was.

Also all the supporters of Campbell seem to blame most of his poor play on the o-line so RT would be a huge upgrade. I think our line would be just fine since we brought Dock back and Samuels will be healthy. We need to start working on depth but I think RT is the biggest need now.

I might be in the minority here, but I think it's...

    1) OLB

    2) RT or LDE

Not only is it a major ? with the possiblity of Blades being an every down starter, Rocky still has plenty of ?'s himself. Thus, we have really absolutely no depth at OLB to begin with and our MLB is old. Time to get some youth, but better yet some starters in place.

DL can be held together with RW and Daniels for the next season and although it's not ideal, the combo of Jansen and Heyer will have suffice for the season. So, basically it comes down to draft the player you think is better for the #2.

It's too bad the FO has dug us in a hole here because it would appear that they are banking on vets who have start quality to be available for vet minimums. Maybe the is a good bet, but as it stands right now...not looking as good.

    RT
    OLB
    DE

I think the complete break down of our offensive line in both the running game and more noticeably in pass protection during the latter part of the season should make RT a no brainer for the number one need we have to fill this offseason. We desperately need to inject youth into this the offensive line It's going to take more than one draft to do so, but getting a stud tackle should be first priority. I don't understand the urge for so many on this board to go after an end or linebacker with the 13th selection. Everyone is so quick to throw JC under the bus, but few think we should use our first pick to help him from getting knocke don his back 10 times a game?
