iPhone internet radio vs. satellite radio?

I'm doing a research paper on satellite radio, and it seems that a recurring theme I come across is how the iPhone along with its applications can offer almost all of the same functionality. Does anyone here have an iPhone, or can shed some more light on the subject for me?

It seems to me that unless you want to listen to Howard Stern or Oprah, you can get any of the other programming online (even NFL for $10 and MLB for $7 monthly), and an iPhone could make that completely portable.

If you don't want the few exclusive stations, things like pandora, aolradio, and last.fm are probably even better options through their iPhone applications.

Pandora is my most used app on my iPhone. I ditched satellite radio about a month ago. Pandora allows you to choose almost exactly what you want and there are no commercials.

Sirius/XM is releasing an app for the iPhone. The company behind the Starplayr Sirius player developed an app that never made it through the approval process, presumably because Sirius/XM was developing their own. It's a no brainer to me.

What about just getting local radio on the iPhone? For things like listening to NFL games, could I just stream a local station online to listen to the game? I've never tried to listen to even Redskins games online, so I have no idea if this is possible. I'm thinking it isn't possible (at least it isn't legal) because it would compete directly with a package the NFL itself has.

I specifically want to know about how internet radio (especially the radio easily compatible with the iPhone or other extremely portable devices) compares to SiriusXM. Those threads don't really talk about that. Some interesting information though. Thanks.

There is no charge for Pandora radio. In the app, you select an artist that you want to hear. When you are on that artists "channel", you will hear songs from him/her and song from other artists that sound similar.

For instance, I picked a Coldplay channel. I hear songs from Coldplay and also songs from the Killers (which I like also) and Oasis (which I don't really like)... among other artists. If you hear a song that you like, you give a "thumbs up" and it will play more songs like the one you "thumbsed up". If you hear a song you don't like, you can give it a "thumbs down" and it won't play songs like that one. Careful though, you only get to skip to the next songs six times in an hour.



As far as terrestrial radio on the iPhone, you can't do it as far as I'm aware. I do however download podcasts of the Big O and Dukes show from the iTunes store quite often. It's free, just like regular radio, except I can listen to it later (I'm at work when they are on the air).

Thanks. Though I was referring to the costs just to use the 3G network. I have no clue how pricing works with that (I assume you can get unlimited access with your monthly subscription costs?)

aolradio has an application for the iPhone and through Shoutcast you can listen to terrestrial radio if you're interested in that. It's only CBS stations though.

From what I've found, local radio stations can't stream their NFL games online?
