Broncos won't lose much if they trade Cutler

Jay Cutler’s success in Denver has been blown way out of proportion, and new coach Josh McDaniels was right to have questions about the fourth-year quarterback.

Cutler earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2008 based on his 4,526 passing yards. But in more important metrics, namely wins (8-8) and TD-to-INT differential (25-to-18), Cutler came up short.

Many of Cutler’s biggest yardage games ended up in the loss column -- the Broncos were 3-4 when he threw for over 300 yards. Denver’s turnstile defense upped the tempo of the game and gave Cutler plenty of opportunities to gain yards in between the 20s, even if those yards didn’t do much to help the Broncos win.

Cutler also benefited from a defensively challenged schedule last season. Thanks in large part to his porous AFC West competition, Cutler faced defenses that ranked in the NFL’s bottom 10 in a majority of his games. The highest-ranked defense he faced all year was No. 9 Tampa Bay. Cutler may think twice about wanting to leave Denver when he looks at the schedules of the teams interested in him.

Cutler also might find life tougher outside of Mike Shanahan’s offense. Shanahan’s offense regularly landed near the top spot in total yardage throughout his years in Denver. Cutler gained more passing yards than his predecessors, but that’s mainly because all the injuries to the Denver running backs over the last two seasons forced Shanahan to go to the air more than he would have liked. While Cutler did a decent job in that offense, Shanahan probably could have found a lot of quarterbacks capable of putting up big numbers.

McDaniels may be young, but he’s been around a fantastic quarterback his whole career and knows what it takes to succeed at that position. If he wasn’t sold on Cutler, that should make other teams around the NFL nervous. For all the highlight-worthy passes Cutler made, McDaniels had to wince at the mental mistakes and forced throws that burned the Broncos last season.

It’s probably not an accident that the teams reportedly interested in Cutler all have iffy track records when it comes to evaluating the position -- take, for example, the Bucs, 49ers, Jets, Lions and Redskins. Big arms or big stats have fooled all of those teams in the recent past. Now, as they try to put together the right offer to land Cutler, they’re lining up to make the same mistake again.

Well, I don't know if I agree that they won't lose much because they don't have a guy behind him to step in and replace him. I hardly think that Chris Simms is going to do as well.

But, the article does echo my feelings that Cutler is still just a kid with promise and isn't there yet. If you are a team without a kid with promise, you probably should be all over this, but if you've got a guy already, it is far from certain that Cutler will be an improvement.

Eh, the guy's is technically using team stats(win-loss record). I think a comparison of his season with Royal and without Royal is better.

You know, I like cutler, but I'm beginning to think Drafting Sanchez is the ticket!

I'm not that high on Cutler at all. He's Campbell with more swagger. He'll throw more TDs but more INTs at the same time.

That said, I can't blame his team's piss poor play on him. His defense was awful. If he could put those numbers up here, he'd probably be far more effective with our defense. Granted, the INTs could have a humongous effect on that as that changes the field position battle, but nonetheless, I can't completely fault him for his defense not being up to par.

Suffice to say Bubba, that you'll be thoroughly disgusted if the Redskins do give up on Campbell and overpay for Cutler?

As I said in the other thread. It's not like JC will go to the pro bowl next year. But, Cutler is overrated and I bet some of the things that came out this week in the media are true.

Yea getting a 25 yard pro-bowl QB is a terrible idea. Cutler cant play because a young, cocky, and may I add very unproven head coach had a thing for another QB and it blew up in his face. The donks screwed up and we should jump on it. But hey if it doesnt work out we can pull our hair out watching another 135 yard 1 td loss by the skins.

Probably a poor comparison, In terms of leadership, but my first thought was a guy named Favre was often criticised for a gun-slinging approach that led to a lot of interceptions.

    This is total B.S.

The Broncos don't have any defense. Now their going to lose their Gunslinging QB?

The Broncos will finish behind the Chiefs and then all the cornballs supporting this thread won't be able to be found.

Funny. Wasn't too steep for Elway. And Elway was totally unproven with no NFL experience at the time.

There are maybe only 5 QB's better then Cutler in the league.
