    Default Extend Haywood NOW

Half of the teams in the league next season are going to be way under the salary cap in the Lebron/Wade/Bosh/Amare sweepstakes. Not everyone can win. What I think you will see is that the losing teams will throw insane amounts of money at the 2nd tier guys on the market like Haywood because they will have the cap room to do so.

As we all know, Haywood is the anchor to our defense and we CANNOT afford to lose him. 19-63 happened without him and we don't want that to happen again unless we are in absolute rebuild mode.

I think Ernie needs to take preemptive actions here and approach Haywood's agent for an extension now. If we can get him resigned at 7 mil a year, that is a steal. If we can get him at 8 mil a year, that is an even deal. If we get him back at 9, maybe we are overpaying, but it is still a price we should be willing to pay for this man. I say we offer him a 3-year deal as well so that he can be let go once JaVale is truly ready.

I also think if we wait, it will hurt us. Varejao is trying to get 8 mil a year on the market and if he does get it, then Haywood will see that and demand a ton more money because he is easily the better player.

Trade BH for a good PG and get value for him.
He isnt a value when he takes nights off....but at least a bunch of GM's like him.
    Let them be fooled.
I admit that he got more consistent last year....but it still isnt every night.
    I give up on him.
    BH and ET are cancers.
    Get rid of them now!

    You do realize that..

    A) We got rid of Etan...

    and

    B) Trading Haywood for a pg would give us only 3 frontcourt players..and only add to the cluster of guards we now have with Arenas, Stevenson, Young, Foye, Miller, Crit, Dixon, and James?

    You do know this...right?

I think this is a great idea but Haywood likely wouldnt do it. The player and the team have to agree, and they are both presented with the same information. Haywood knows the market is only climbing and next year it will explode. We would have to overpay for him bigtime, with a long term (not 3yr) deal to appease him Im sure.

It will be interesting to see what he does this year...contract year, (hopefully) healthy team, no more Etan...he has a lot of motivation to be an all-star.

At the same time, though, remember that Haywood was out last season. Maybe that experience has made him more risk-averse. If he were to get injured again this season, his value might be low on the market.

Youre right, but I think the risk-reward is there. Look at the deal Poet got.

Worst case - bad season or gets hurt - Poet deal
Best case - stellar season, all-star play, all-star contract

    Worth the risk...
