ok so here's the main thing I had heard about room 401 (the room I lived in) prior to coming to VMI.
as some of you may recall VMI was an all male school until all the way up until 1997. the next year females became a part of the corps, and the number has increased ever since. many old timers and alumni are still upset with this.
2 years ago, 401 was occupied by females from my company, charlie. they are going to be juniors this upcoming year. basically they held a seance in the room late one night with a Ouija board. They asked the following questions and got the respective replies:
"if there are any spirits here that live above us or with us, make yourselves known."
"Yes, I am here"
"Are you the deceased spirit of a cadet who committed suicide after being convicted by the honor court?"
"yes"
"What do you think of us and the other women being in the corps?"
"Get the **** out of my room"
the board was thrown against the wall. That's a second hand account, I've never heard the story from those it happened to.
supposedly also, if you tap the inboard wall, it will tap back. I tried it a few times and nothing happened, but based on the other stuff that happened in the room to us, i wouldn't doubt the authenticity of it.
for clarifications sake I had 5 roommates for a total of 6 guys in the room.
now for my own experiences in the room. about 2 months into the school year, 5 of us were gathered around a computer in the dark while my other roommate slept. I looked up from the computer and saw someone cross the room from his rack (bed) to the sink and turn on the water. I looked down and back up again and no one was there and the water was off. I called out to my roommate. he was fast asleep. thoroughly freaked out, the five of us start to panic. my one roommate is fascinated by it and takes out a camera and starts taking pictures. orbs are showing up like crazy in certain areas of the ceiling under the upper room where the cadets killed themselves. we hear thuds above us. deep low thuds, it almost sounds like heavy footed marching. about 20 minuted later, in the area of the room under the tower, the contents of our wall lockers (like a closet) start to rattle and all our toiletries are flung off the shelves. at this point we start to shout and fight our way to the part of the room that isn't under the tower and toward the door. just then the officer of the night, I think it was one of the Colonels, comes in with his flashlight and asks us what the commotion is. we tell him, he looks around and up at the ceiling, flashing his light around. he looks at us and tells us to sleep in the area of the room not under the tower, and to let him know if more happens. after that point nothing happened that night. we also did an experiment the next night; we took pictures of the same spots in the dark and not a single orb showed up. I have some of the pictures, I'll post them.
that was the major event. other little things happened throughout the year, but that night was one of the most terrifying things ever. what was worse is that you can't change rooms or move. we had two choices: face the room and whatever it had for us, or leave the school. of course we all stayed and not much happened afterward, but stuff did happen.
i saw a laundry bag swing at a 90 degree angle and suspend itself in air one night. My roommate provoked whatever it is that inhabits the room above us one time during the day and something flew off his desk. I heard footsteps pacing above us occasionally from time to time. crazy thing is that the stuff almost always happened below the tower portion of the room.
on an unrelated note, one time I was on guard at 3 AM. a swirling wall of mist 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide descended over the walls of barracks and swirled in the courtyard and dissipated rapidly. at that point i had 6 months of paranormal activity under my belt and I just rolled my eyes and shrugged. i was definitely more pissed than scared lol.
If I think of more stories I'll post them.
Photos coming up![]()
