Sunday, October 4: Breast Cancer Awareness Via Football Uniforms

Posted Oct 4th 2009 by Matt Terl

The Redskins will be wearing the traditional white jerseys and burgundy pants for today's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, along with the decidedly non-traditional pink gloves, pink wristbands, and -- in some cases -- pink cleats, as part of the NFL's "A Crucial Catch" breast cancer awareness campaign.

Here's the pink captain's patch, affixed to Chris Samuels's jersey.

    The gloves, towels, and wristbands.

As I mentioned via Twitter on Friday, Chris Cooley and Antwaan Randle El were breaking in their pink cleats in practice. But Clinton Portis didn't practice, so one of the equipment room interns has been walking around in Portis's cleats all morning, trying to get them good and broken in. I don't know if the gametime decision on Portis has been made yet or not, but if he can go, his cleats'll be ready.

What a job! Breaking in CP's pink cleats! LOL

This is a nice gesture by the NFL though. Kind of like when the MLB uses pink bats.

Some of the stuff actually looks pretty cool... Kudos to the NFL for doing this.

they also had hats with pink on them made for the game. My Mom got me one at the Skins store yesterday and my Mom and Dad are at the game today. She's a breast cancer survivor. So I'll be repping my pink, today... you should to.

The Redskins have had pink ribbon campaigns at the stadium during October for several years. It's good to see the players getting more involved and the NFL stepping it up.

Am I allowed to be a 'jerk' here?

I wish the incredibly lethal pancreatic cancer had this kind of attention. Maybe we could make even more progress on it. Breast cancer has a very high survival rate compared to some other forms.

Do they have a heart disease week? That's our #1 killer, I think. Prostate cancer?

Why not just have a cancer awareness week?

It just seems out of proportion and locked in with a gender, in spite of its relatively high survival rate, the fact that the rate of occurrence is not as large as believed once you factor out women over 65.

You will give the Redskins an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time you will help them accomplish wonders.

I applaud their effort for cancer awareness but at the same time, what a hypocrite the NFL is.

They'll let the teams wear pink to promote awareness but when Peyton Manning wanted to wear black hightops to honor Johnny Unitas(when he passed), the NFL said no and threatened to fine him if he did.

Or when Jake Plummer wanted to honor Pat Tillman, he was told no and threatened with a fine.

    Their uniform rule policy sucks.

There was a great article in Time not too long ago about how the whole breast cancer awareness thing is actually damaging to the overall fight against cancer.

Obviously the Susan B Komen group has great intentions but they get such a huge majority of the donations and attention that other types of cancer are being ignored.
