Default AP - Costco Protects Palin From Tomatoes By Taking Them Off Shelves

But did they remove the eggs, lettuce, shoes, grapes, etc. also?

A Costco in Utah took tomatoes off the shelves during a visit by Sarah Palin, after the Alaska Governor was pelted with the fruit on a stop at the Mall of America. Via Harpers, the Salt Lake Tribune reports:

Rappaport stopped at the Salt Lake City Costco to do some shopping, unaware that Palin was scheduled to be there for a book signing. [...]
The clerk told her they had no tomatoes that day.

    No tomatoes? At Costco?

As she was leaving, she noticed a man with a store manager's name tag and asked him why they had no tomatoes. He informed her the store did have tomatoes, but they were taken off the shelves for a few hours.

It turns out that Palin had been pelted with a tomato at an earlier stop on her book tour and the management at the Costco was determined it wouldn't happen here.

Now THAT is how you get free publicity. Good marketing Costco.

This sounds like something from the Onion.

    But apparently it's true.

I'm sure tinned tomatoes were available for the truly committed in the angry mob.

I don't like Palin, but this story makes me sad.

We have lost all semblance of civil discourse in this country.

Agreed, the fact that this is necessary is kind of sad.

Heh. I was just thinking that. Did they remove canned tomatoes and openers as well?

But anyway. Anyone who would hit someone in public like that should be thrown in jail.

I like Palin, but have no problems with a vocal protest - that is our right. I've seen a lot of peaceful protests of each president in my lifetime. I've seen some violent protests as well.

I believe we still have a lot of good civil discourse in the U.S. It's that small number of wackos on both sides who ruin it for those of us who debate on honest terms - sometimes, vigorously so. Throwing any kind of object is wrong, but this was just one person.

It could be worse. She could have been smacked in the face with a statue.

I really don't like Palin, but I wouldn't consider going to a book signing and disrupting it.

Anyone who tried to disrupt an event like this by throwing something should spend years doing community service or similar until they learn not to be such a ****ing idiot.

The security when I went to her book signing was ridiculous. Rightfly so, but still.

People just need to remind them selves, if you can't say something nice, shut the **** up. (and don't throw ****)

I worry that we are heading down that road.

    Eh, maybe I'm overreacting.

I don't agree that you need to shut up about a public figure if you don't have anything nice to say. Quite the opposite.

    But throwing stuff is different.
