No it didn't. Cataclysm was highly popular.

What did kill Wow was the new expansion pack. Wow was gradually simplifying the player experience, but by MoP the changes were so drastic and simplified that it may have turned many people off. Honestly, the changes help, but they really, really simplify the game. You're basically told now what your rotation is, which spells help you the most. Used to have to figure that out by asking people in Trade chat or looking it up on forums. Now the game just tells you. \

Something being popular doesn't mean it's of higher quality. WOTLK dumbed down the game considerably. In BC you actually had to be good to get anything high end done, whether it was raiding or PVP, and classes were actually unique. WOTLK homogenized the classes and made the game ez mode. Maybe I sound elitist but the point of MMOs is progressing your character and it's not as fun when everyone is basically the same.

WoW died whenever Battlegrounds/Arenas (whatever it was called) came out and destroyed open world PvP. Game got boring, no clue why I kept getting drawn back into it, I did give Cataclysm a shot, but leveling sucks. I cannot imagine even trying to level a char to 90, makes me want to vomit. SWTOR was badass when it came out, again, open world PvP sucked, I quit. Playing TERA Online now, well havent in bout a month after ****ing Battlegrounds came out and it ruined open world PvP.

This arena based **** has ruined open world PvP. Its ****ing horrible. The ****ing last thing I want to do is grind NPCs/Dungeons for PvP gear or grind Arenas/BGs for ****ing PvP gear. Everything is a ****ing grind in todays MMORPGs and it bends over and ****s the casual gamer that wants to grind to max level, then enjoy PvPing. Gear based PvP is for tossers anyhow.

I liked Arena because it was the best way to measure actual PVP skill. I have nothing against open world PVP but if you're not on a PVP server, it's pointless. Ganking doesn't equal skill either. And the cool thing about Arena was that you only needed 1 or 2 other people(or 4 if you did 5s but I never did 5s)to form a team and do matches, so it was a great way to spend time if you couldn't raid for whatever reason.

Ganking is part of open world PvP along with getting killed while leveling by players already at max skill/higher level. All the games that were the founding fathers of PvP based MMORPGs allowed it and it was wonderful. Then all the whiney peeps came along and cried enough to make an impact on PvP based games and ruined them. Ultima Online - ruined, WoW - ruined, AoC - semi ruined. Now all these new PvP based games have PvE and PvP servers, but the whiney little jerks still make characters on the PvP servers and *****/moan about ganking, etc.

Its pathetic and because of money, they will always get cattered to. Yes I kill newbs leveling, yes I gank other players 5 on 1, hell 10 on 1 for fun. Yes I get ganked, yes I get killed leveling, yes I win/die one on one in even fights. To me, Old School UO (circa 1999-2000) will always be the basis of how you should set-up a PvP based game. UO could have been saved if they had just added PvE servers instead of adding Trammel to the existing servers allowing people to travel between PvE carebear land and PvP felluca at will. Killed the game.

You cant please everyone, but I swear there are enough people talking/complaining about open world PvP being ruined/lacking in every MMORPG I play, so surely there are enough people to have at least one server dedicated for hardcore PvP, no rules, looting, etc. Every game should have three types of servers: PvE, PvP (with BGs/Arenas/Open World) Hardcore PvP (open world only, no BGs/Arenas, nowhere is safe, item looting). We are talking about dedicating 1-2 servers for hardcore, the rest a balance between PvE and PvP. If nobody plays on the hardcore servers, merge them into one. They do merges all the time so its not really a big deal.

    +1

Won't ever happen. The carebear lobby is strong. This is why I stopped playing MMOs in 2005.

I'm not sure what's fun about ganking. I get no pleasure killing some guy 50 levels below me. Where's the fun in that?

Season 1-4, 6, and 7 Arena were the true test of PvP skill in World of Warcraft. 3x Gladiator, baby!
