Default Once again turning to ES for advice, Violin for lil one

My daughter took up the violon earlier this year with her school's orchestra. The music teacher was awesome and allowed her to use a school violin for the entire year. We really liked the idea because it allowed her to get a feel for the instrument before we had to lay out any cash.

Fast forward to today, it was her last day of school and the violin she was using is no longer available to her but she'd really like to keep practicing over the summer. So now we are looking at buying a violin outright. I have looked all over (craigslist, ebay, local papers) and there seems to be a very wide range of prices.

She must have a 4/4 (full size) violin, no color, no electronics. We'd like to have a case, extra bow and maybe a tuner.

Anyone know where to get a decent beginner violin without me needing to be picked up off the floor from sticker shock?!?

    as always, TIA!

I'd ask the teacher as she knows better than anyone else what is appropriate for her skill level.

Yeah, check your local music store. For us it's Foxes Music in Falls Church. They have rentals as well, and rent-to-own options.

Haha! That's the exact store I was going to say. My Mom goes there all the time and I got my cello from them also.

And it's right next to Elevation Burger. Mmmmmm

In Hagerstown. we have one reputable music store and they are way overpriced because of that. This will be our last resort if nothing else is an option.

Had the talk with her, which is where I got the specifics of 4/4, no colors, no electronics. As far as anything else she pretty much said that you can spend as little as 70 bucks and as much as you want but the quality will depend on the price point for the most part.

I guess I was looking for more online type answers. I've found the $70 ones and I've found the $1000+ ones. I was jus hoping that maybe there was a secret place out there in cyberland that musicians knew about where i could find $70 violins with the quality of the more expensive ones. hey.... cant blame a guy for having a dream

Check with the band director,, chances are pretty good that the school has a deal worked out with a local music shop to get instruments. I don't know if it will drop the price much, but you can be assured they'll be reputable.

I don't know about stringed instruments, but when it comes to brass at the very least, you want to try out the specific instrument you'll be buying. Two instruments of the same make and model are not necessarily gonna be equal.

CK - My neighbor across the street is a concert violinist and a high school music teacher. And he has a step daughter about the age of yours. And he gives violin lessons to students. If you'd like, I can get his opinion.

My feeling is that buying an instrument online would be difficult. Not that it would be difficult to find one, but you'd have the same issue as buying a car - you really want to test it out before you lay down the dough.

    Is buying used an option?
