Well, tonight was a great feeling that was immediately deflated. I wanted to take advantage of the cooler weather so I did a 10K this evening, starting just before 8:00. My goal was to finally break an hour, as my personal best previously was 1:00:26.

I got started, hit the first mile just before 9:00 and the second one around 19:00. Mile 3 around 28:30, Mile 4 around 38:00. Mile 5 is almost all uphill, but I felt like I was powering through it pretty well. At some point, it was too dark to see my watch, so I hit the light, except I hit the wrong button and switched to timer two. No big deal, I hit it again and saw that I was at 46:00, and I finished mile 5 at the 48:30 mark, which was better than usual. Then I hit mile 6 around 56:30, and knew I had it made...I finished in 58:47 for the 10K. I was elated, then I hit the light again and noticed that the time was still going.

Then I realized I wasn't on timer one, I was on the clock. I hadn't finished in 58:47, it was 8:58:47 at night. I had been so excited during the run I hadn't even noticed the 8 in front of my time when I was reading the clock. Frantic, I switched over to timer 1.

1:01:13. Not only had I not broken an hour, I hadn't even set a new PR. Dammit, I felt great during the run too.

Ain't a thing wrong with a run like that, P. Not a thing.

I was pretty happy with mine tonight. 8 miles in 1:35:12. A sub-12-minute mile average for me in anything above 5 miles is excellent for me right now. My goal was to finish in 1:40, so it was nice to beat that pretty handily too.

Whatsmore, I hadn't run for two weeks. I wanted to make sure my left knee was 100% before getting out there again. I felt like absolute garbage for the first 2 1/2 to 3 miles. But I really loosened up after that, and settled into a nice rhythm. I even had enough left for a nice little kick over the last 1/2 mile. And fortunately, so far, no pain -- other than the usual mild soreness/fatigue. We'll see how I feel in the AM.

On vacation in the mountains and enjoying running in cooler temperatures, even if the elevation makes it a little tougher. I did a hilly eight miles this morning and another three 'shakeout' tonight. On track for a record week in terms of mileage.

    Cooler temps? Color me jealous.

4 mile slog & jog tonight in oppressive humidity, 85º/ HI 94º.

6 miles tomorrow. 1 mile wu & cd surrounding 4 X 1 mile hill repeats.

I've broken 50 a few times. That would be up to an hour's run (say between 6 & 7 miles) six days of the week and then a long run of up to twelve on the seventh day.

This week with some two-a-days the number will be higher, without a single run of that length. I'm trying to keep the mileage high through the fall. I'll be doing officiating quite a few evenings, so I want to get in the habit of running in the mornings too.

Finished my 10K race today, gun was at 6:30 p.m. in Vienna. Was hoping to break an hour but missed it by a little; I finished in 1:01:48. I guess when you factor in the 90 degree heat, it wasn't a bad run, but I was really hoping to pull it off.

Sad thing was, I hit the "6 mile" mark at 57:30 or so, and thought I had an outside chance. There were guys yelling "less than 1/4 mile, and it's flat, go go go." Well let me tell you, even at my most exhausted, I can go 1/4 of a mile faster than 4:18, and it sure felt like a lot longer than 1/4 mile. I think they had their milage markers off a little. Jerks

finally unstrapped the hr monitor and went out and ran as hard as i could. 4.3 miles yesterday with an 8:23 / mile average. today called for a 5k race, went 24:57. my best ever 5k was a 23:44, and that was almost all flat.

You would have been faster today without yesterday's workout. With your prep & dedication, you are going to be ready for your half and surprised by your success.

edit- Was today's run a simulated race or an actual race?

Yeah. I always want to tell people who yell 'you're almost done' to shut the hell up.

Question for you guys: My new apartment is surrounded by hills. There's a college with a nice track and a park with a trial within 2 miles, but some of the hills are pretty steep to get to them and it feels weird to drive my car somewhere to go for a run.

I've been joggingg up the hills and walking down them. Its really taking a toll on my legs though. I don't know how to run on inclines or declines.

It's taking a toll because it's making your legs stronger. Hill training is an extremely effective way to improve your running.
