Need some advice, so I am running a half in 3 weeks, I ran 10 last week and ended up with some shin splint. I ran a half on St Patty's Day so I know I am capable of the distance, however, i'm concerned my training is going to be limited over the next week or so why my shin splints heal. I have a goal of 1:50.00 in mind, ran 1:51.20 on March 18th, and would love to get there on May 6th and i'm mildly concerned these shin splints might hold me back.

So here is my question, If you had minor shin splints 3 weeks before a half marathon, and had already ran 13 as recent as March 18th, 10 miles as recent as April 3rd, what would your approach be to training over the next 3 weeks to make sure you are fully prepared for your half marathon? All advice is much appreciated.

I kinda had this same dilemma when I ran my half back in October. I was having terrible pains in my knee and it sounded like it was tendinitis. So the last like 3 weeks leading up to the race, I would just go on my long run for the week and rest and ice the rest of the time. If you're already up to 10, you're fine. That's the most I ran leading up to my half race.

I just ran a half a few weeks ago, 13 isn't my concern, i'm more wondering about what my strategy should be over the next 3 weeks so i can accomplish my goal of 1:50.

I would love to get in at least 2 more long runs.....

Shameless bragging time. Ran the Strides for Success 5K in Fairfax this morning, and got a PR of 22:47. Excited about that, and excited to have my son finish in 24:02 in his first 5K!
Feeling better about the Historic Half coming up in May. Hoping to break 1:50 in that one.

    Nice Work Dude!!

ah yes, cracking 1:50, when in May is your race? Where are you pacing your current long runs?

I'm running Frederick on May 5th, "My Plan" is to start with 3, 8:45 miles then work my way down and finish with (4) 8:15's, going for the barf during the final mile and a tenth, 7:45 ish. All I do know is, I need to average 8 seconds faster per mile than my last half.

I know up here the high school tracks are open to the public anytime the school isn't using them. I live right down the street from a HS and go running on theirs all the time.

I'm doing the Historic Half Marathon in Fredericksburg on 5/20. As for the pacing on my longer runs, I'm not too good about that. I generally start out too fast and take a while to settle into a steady pace I can hold for a while. I use an app called Cardiotrainer on my smartphone to give me my splits. I'm hoping to average around 8:15/mile for the half, which would get me under 1:50. As long as the heat isn't too bad, I should be able to hold that pace.

I personally don't like running much more than 8-10 miles, but I understand where you're coming from. I, personally, would give my shins as much rest as possible, as I assume you are going to run in other races throughout the year and don't want this injury to linger. In my case, I am a bit older, but if there were a choice between my fitness being better, but my body hurting a bit or vice versa, I'd choose the second option (body feeling good, fitness a little worse). Reason is, I hate feeling crappy on any race day, and would sooner have a bit slower time and enjoy myself than feel like garbage for 80-90% of the race and run the risk of being out of action for weeks afterwards.

Since you ran a half <1 month ago, as long as you can get a few decent runs in (even 5-6 mile runs), I don't think you're going to see your time hurt that much. Do all the stretching/icing you can, include power walking to work your muscles while your resting, and don't pound the pavement so hard when you return to running.

    Good luck.

Figured this needed a bump. I have the Warrior Dash on Sunday. Anyone else ever done it?

Congrats! Besides running, what else did it involve?

My son and I did the Historic Half marathon in Fredericksburg yesterday. Today, I am very, very sore.

Did I mention I was sore?!?

The obstacles weren't too terrible. But the hills sucked! Then being soaked in mud and water doesn't make running any easier haha

Did a local 5K in Dale City this past weekend to gauge where I am in regards to the Half Marathon I'm supposed to run in two weeks. I wasn't too happy with my time, 28:49, but it was a very hilly course, I didn't realize Dale City neighborhoods could be such a pain in the ass. They had a long climb at the 2 mile mark that felt like I was going straight up, and there was almost never a flat stretch, just up or down hills the whole way. Also, the start/finish were in different places, the finish line was 100 feet or so higher in elevation.

Anyway, that time puts me around (projected) 2:12:30 for the half marathon, so my goal of breaking 2 hours might be a little off. For reference, I did 10 on the Mount Vernon trail two Sundays ago and finished around 1:40:00, so I don't see it happening. I might need to find another half in October to give it another shot.

I have a 10 miler in less than a month in Baltimore City. I just ran 6 miles the other day in 53:50, so hoping I can keep that pace.
