Well, on a non-marathon note, I got out for my first run of the spring after taking 3-4 months off. 3.4 miles. Brutal. Sore.

The first run is always the hardest!

Humble Brag: Finished the Tobacco Road half here in Raleigh in 1:38:47 (was going for under 1:40). Now working on trying to do the City of Oaks half in November in under 1:35.

Gizmodo: How Far Do You Run Playing Different Sports

Basketball: 2.7 miles (max recorded this season, Luol Deng, Bulls)
Football: 1.25 miles (cornerbacks and wide receivers)
    Tennis: 15 miles
    Baseball: 100 yards
Soccer: 9.5 miles (max recorded, likely a midfielder)

I've done a 3 and a 3.8 mile run in the last week. So far knee is feeling great, looking like I won't be able to get my distance up in time for the half marathon I wanted to do first weekend of May just because I'm worried about reinjury and want to take things slow.

On Monday I'm going to a running analysis event hosted by a physical therapy group and my local running club. Hoping to get some tips from there too about helping the knee.

My daughter's promising high school track season has been going down the drain because of a cranky hamstring. So frustrating for her, and me.

Sorry to hear this G, the good news is, she can recover and injuries are part of the deal with running, the key is to keep the spirit and confidence up and ready for her next run.

Just registered for a 5 miler on May 18! This will only be my 2nd ever race after a half last fall. Looking forward to a much shorter distance and hoping I can keep it under a 10 min mile pace. Have improved my speed quite a bit the last few months, I just need to work on sustaining it for more than 2-3 miles.

With two weeks to go, don't beat yourself up with hard efforts. Running comfortably with relaxed form for longer distances is the most important element of running anything over a mile distance. How far is your current typical training run? Is it even paced?

The last few weeks I've been doing a 1.5, 2, and 2.5 to 3 mile run each week, with a soccer game or a day or two in the weight room thrown in there. I don't really pace myself, I just run at a comfortable speed which ends up being about 10 min/mile, slightly less on the 1.5 or 2 mile runs.

You're right it's coming up fast and I don't want to push myself too hard; maybe I should temper my expectations on time? Also should I bump up to 2, 3, 4 miles this week? I was doing a half training program and was up to 5 or 6 miles until about a month ago.

Developing your aerobic base is the most important element of training. I'd lean toward running 4-6 miles at a gentle pace as the core of your remaining training.

Doing a few tempo runs close to race pace is not a bad idea to get mentally comfortable with the level of race discomfort, if you know what I mean.
