Danny Smith has always sucked. People think he is good, because he screams on the sideline when really the special team unit as a whole has sucked since he been here.

My guess - it's only a guess - is that Danny Smith wasn't responsible for decisions like ARE returning punts and Rock returning kicks. The head coach decided that he wanted ball security over more explosiveness, even if that decision ultimately didn't lead to better ball security (at least in the case of ARE).

BTW, I always get a kick about 'fire this guy' or 'cut this player' threads.

We have no CLUE what happens in practices, team meetings or contractual matters...yet, we all want to be GM...

My guess is that ARE was a contractual matter...Rock had his moments.

Is he Snyder's best friend? Because our special teams have sucked for years.

Its hard to argue with you Special Teams is Non existent.

Letting Randle El continue to return punts all those years?

Rock Cartwright returning kicks for a milleniium?

Fred Davis last week, a blocked punt this week? How does this guy have a job again?

Danny Smith is the common denominator to a pretty horrible special teams unit, so I guess your point is valid. Still, I think it has more to do with the lack of talent and the evaluation process than it does the coaches, especially this year. It's year one under a new regime. Smith is a good coach I suppose, but it'd be nice to have a fresh face there IMO.

I agree. He should not be here. Another personnel mistake.

For as long as special teams has been poor, you'd think they'd have looked at the guy in charge. Nope.

Let's not go that far. Nothing could make Hixon look competent. Smith should have been flushed with him, though.

Default Is Danny Smith a Good Special Teams Coach?

I mean, this guy's like a cockroach, no matter what he seems to survive. But why? When was the last time our special teams was any good? I just remember a constant steady stream of missed crucial field goals, bad snaps, dumb penalties, fumbled returns, etc., and he's the guy at the helm, so he's the guy who, I'd think, would have to take responsibility. And the team almost never seems to make plays (although, yes, I am aware of the Philip Daniels block today).

We all know how important special teams are, and I think we just SUCK at it, and don't understand why Smith gets any respect or deference?

All that having been said, I am not an expert on special teams, and maybe I have a selective memory or am just seeing what I want to see, so if someone thinks he's actually good at his job, and can explain why, I'd love to hear it.

He was special teams coach in Philly under Ray Rhodes (or maybe early for Reid), and they were bad. I was shocked when he got the job in DC, but they seemed to doing pretty well so I thought oh well just one of those things. Until this year.
