Redskins HogsHaven.com - Charles Mann's Perspective on our Pass Rush

Charles Mann Explains Why the Pass Rush Is So Miserable & Personally Offers Help

by Kevin Ewoldt on Nov 19, 2010 1:45 PM EST in Redskins Analysis

I know you had a brief chance to talk to Orakpo, and only recently have the alumni been reunited with the organization, but have any other players seeked your advice?

Charles Mann: "No. The only guy that I've also been talking with is Andre Carter. Andre's really been reaching out to me. You know, he's been having a tough time adjusting to this system and at times seems lost out there. He's been reaching out to me like a big brother. 'What do I do? How do I work through this? Have you even been in a situation like this before?' Those kinds of questions. And I really appreciate it. I have a lot of bottled up information to give to any listenting ear. But I'm not going to force myself on anybody."

Rak and Carter have so many rushes with no hands in the dirt and it's not working. It drives me nuts. Why is the pass rush so pathetic?

Charles Mann "Please print this. I would, if asked, come out to Redskins Park and I would come out weekly and train or help them get it down on how to rush the passer. When I came to the team it was Dexter Manley and Tony McGee. Tony ended up with 115 career sacks and Dexter with ninety...whatever it is. 98.
And they knew how to rush the passer. And so I got right up in their grill and I said, "Show me, teach me"...and Tony McGee was really helpful and showed and taught me some stuff, and I watched them rush the passer and that's how I learned. Who's teaching Orakpo and who taught Andre Carter? No one."

I am not going to take the whole article but I do think fans should read it as it is a great article and I thank Kevin Ewoldt for the Q and A with Charles Mann. Charles Mann is a great dude and was an even better player. The organization needs to look at this and take him up on his offer to come out and teach our players. Haslett may or may not be doing a good job but taking an ex-Redskins offer to come out and help is never a bad thing (i.e. Chris Samuels)

The idea of setting up a PayPal acct to cover Mann's costs isn't the worst thing I've read this week, How much you need Charles??

Seriously, I'd love to see more of the alumni involved, direct coaching of techniques or even just hoo-rah eggin the guys on.

We need him here, period. I love how he explains that he was not handed sacks like the guys are today. He "had to go through at least one blocker" and still got what, like 86 sacks total???

That's a pretty sad commentary on our coaching staff.

That would be awesome... And not just with Charles Mann... Art Monk...DG... Ken Harvey... So many of the old guys that could be helping out all season... Not just in training camp for a couple of weeks.... Too bad it will never happen...

Only goes to show how disgusting Snyder truly was at treating the alums before Bruce Allen got in his ear. Run the Redskins like a corporation with that douchey atmosphere.

Isnt that the truth!! I thought the coaches and coordinators were supposed to teach these guys?? I'd love to see Charles out there helping them, but it really does say that our current "line" coaches are for crap..

Some of you people need to get out of the 80's man. Its just pathetic how many stupid ideas come from losing all the time. Whats next? We need Doug Williams as our QB coach? We need the Hogs to teach our OL not to suck? We HAVE to hire Russ Grimm because he was a Hog and only He can coach our players?!

Get over the glory days, its doing nothing for us right now but keep a positive memory in our heads whilst our team disappoints over and over.

Everybody in todays society wants it and wants it now!!!!! We have a good coaching staff and GM that have inherited some turds and they are slowly dealing with it. Once we find a true NT and get some new blood in here on defense, this defense will prosper. Haynesworth gone, Carter is part of the problem, gone, another decent LB or two and this defense can get over itself.

I think our defense is victimized just like our fans, from their stats. "Top ten defense" my ass. They have not been that good over the past several years and never put up when they absolutely had to. They never won games like good defenses do, they never, never took over games like the great defenses today do on the weekly basis.

Yeah we have sucked for 20 yrs. At least they didnt leave town in the middle of the night or fail to "sellout" games getting blacked out all the time. Snyder's getting better, let the coaches do what they have to do, they would have honestly cut all the dead weight if they could but in todays day and age in the NFL they cant.

Why should WE chip in money to get ex-players to go out and give advice and tips to current players on the roster? lol ...The players get FINED more for wearing the wrong color socks than some ES members make in 6 months. Dez Bryant lost a $50,000 earring on the field last weekend, fer pete's sake! lol...Let the players pay up if they want the additional tutoring. And as Mann said, the players have to want it themselves anyway...what better way of showing that they truly want the advice and knowledge than by paying to have it brought in?

kinda off topic but I saw Charles once and said a word or two to him without actually knowing who he was. only later did I realize who he was, him and Art have a office in Vienna and me dumbass didnt put two and two together when the company name is called Monk and Mann! I loled at myself when I realized it, maybe I should pay more attention?

Well, it certainly couldn't hurt matters if Mann gave them a few tips, but I can see the reality of looking in the past to better the future, but there are instances where the game has been overly complexed, and simplicity could be a strategy new to most players.
The ONE thing I would absolutely love to see is a total NFL overhaul of the salaries; if players are forced to "earn" their pay, we would be witnessing teams like Seattle, Denver, Washington, Detroit, and a few others playing alot better. When a player makes more money in a month than many will see in a lifetime, something just doesn't pass the smell test, so if every player has a set amount of money, we would be looking at a totally different NFL today...

Andre's really been reaching out to me. You know, he's been having a tough time adjusting to this system and at times seems lost out there. He's been reaching out to me like a big brother. 'What do I do? How do I work through this? Have you even been in a situation like this before?' Those kinds of questions.
    Two things,

Firstly, we have a coaching staff who should be answering these questions..

Secondly, It's hard to see us paying that option bonus on Andre next summer to retain him for the 2011 season.
