Default Official 2010/2011 Winter Weather Thread

Yes folks, like it or not, it's that time of year again!

Last year was extremely fun for snow lovers with most places in the DMV seeing the most snow in a season since records have been kept! After one of the warmest summers on record, what's in store for this winter??

    No clue at all....

The early thinking was that with La Nina around, our biggest problem probably would have been ice. With us seeing about normal temps and precip.
It seems now La Nina has peaked and may be waning. Is there lag? Will we still see La Nina effects even though it's going away?

    Edit:
For all you weather noobs out there, here are a few links that will help in explaining some weather terms, and show where we get some of our information from

Well, I'm glad we now have an "official" weather thread.

Now to the important stuff, when's it gonna snow?

As I've told a few others,I'll see what I can do about sending some of the snow we've gotten so far,(and then some),your way.

In GFS world, Dec. 6-7. About a foot of snow for DC.
    In reality...not sure...

Well let's hope GFS is right. A foot of snow would be cool.

If we get half the amount of last winter's snowfall, it will be a big year for snow lovers.

Thing about this area is our winter weather is so random. Sometimes we can go a few years without seeing a big snowfall, then all of a sudden 25 inches are on the ground. Love blizzards, bring it on!

Is it really going to get that much colder in the next week or so? I like cold weather as much as the next guy, but in looking at the 10 day forecast on weather.com it says it's going to be as high as 58F on November 30th in my area, so I'm not holding my breath yet. What's more it looks like the high's are all going to be in the 50's at least.

Don't we usually start to see some high's in the mid to upper 40's by this time of year?

Weather.com is always a bit warmer and always late in updating their forecasts.
It may make it back up into the low 50s around that time, but with another cold front coming through.

Yeah. Avg. high is around 50.

Even without the fantasy snowstorm, the cold has been consistantly in the forecast for a while. We'll see, but it looks like we could struggle to hit 40 for a while if that 30th-Dec.1st cold front is as strong as it might be.

(with the snowstorm, we'll be struggling to hit 30)

We better get a HUGE blizzard this year. Bigger then last year. I'm moving to Guam early next year and won't see snow for a while.

Now that I got a real job i'm going to miss wasting my days away on the next GFS' Fantasy storms

Also, thought i'd share this map I came across on americanwx.com:

We got 6+ inches of snow last weekend and are supposed to get a storm this Wednesday and Thursday. Perfect timing.
