Idaho Statesman: Pianist loses 3 fingers due to Potato Gun mishap

POCATELLO, Idaho — An Idaho State University student and pianist lost three fingers in a potato gun explosion.

The Idaho State Journal reports Derek Schaible underwent surgery at Portneuf Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition Sunday night.

Neighbor Paul Dial says he was watching television Sunday afternoon when he heard a loud boom that shook the pictures on his wall. He ran out and helped Schaible, wrapping his hands around his right arm and holding it above Schaible's head to stop the blood flow until paramedics arrived.

Schaible is a senior majoring in music performance, according to ISU's Web site. The Journal reports he was scheduled to play piano at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at the nearby First United Methodist Church on Sunday night.

I am not whistling dixie here, but maybe he got a lesson in physics he was not seeking. Don't they get the Internets in Idaho? Youtube has plenty of Potato gun instruction.

That's what I've been thinking! I mean, I'm a hack guitar player who never made it beyond bar band status, but I quit constructionto protect my fingers. Part of me wants to make a Darwin joke but then my empathy kicks in...getiing older and wiser can be a bummer sometimes.

In your case it clearly didn't take being older and wiser to know enough to protect your livelihood. So now this schlep doesn't have that to worry about. He can work construction all he wants.
