Thread: Dex All-Pro more than Pro Bowler?

Default Dex All-Pro more than Pro Bowler?

We all know the career that Dex had, but imagine the career he could've had if it wasn't for the yayo. How did Dex only make the Pro Bowl once? Also, how can someone make the All-Pro team more (2) than making the Pro Bowl (1)? It's harder to be an All-Pro than it is a Pro Bowler. Just shows the Pro Bowl voting is a joke. Fan voting should be removed.

Name recognition, highlight reel plays, popularity.

While he had the name recognition, I don't remember many highlight reel plays for Manley, nor do I think he was that popular a player outside of the Redskins fanbase.

A player with 103.5 career sacks should have automatic recognition.

Should, but take a look at London Fletcher...always near the top of the league in tackles, named to his first Pro Bowl two years ago, as an alternate.

I had a similar discussion on the JMU board recently. Charles Haley gets HOF votes because of the five rings, but if you look at the sack numbers he and Dexter were really very comparable players. Shows what name recognition and being known throughout the league gets you.

Beat me to it. LT would get busy during halftime and Parcells would allow it from what I've read. (I actually find it hard to believe considering Parcell's personality- but every rumor has a hint of truth doesn't it?)

Manley gets no love when people discuss all-time great pass rushers, yet his sacks-per-game average is just as high, if not higher, than most of them. I believe my first thread covered it.

Had an incredible opportunity to meet him this year. I was lucky enough to be part of a meet and greet with him prior to the Packers game. Incredible personality. He broke up the room with almost every story he told. I do agree he was really overlooked during his years with the Skins!

Dexter's mouth is what kept him from more pro bowls. His first two seasons were solid but not pro bowl worthy. He made a name for himself starting in the 82 NFC Championship game.

83 is where he should have enjoyed the rewards of "name recognition", unfortunately Dexter put a bullseye on himself with the "Mr D" schtick and the perception was that he had a down season in 83.

Dexter should have been a pro bowler in 84 and 85 but by then he was known as a fierce trash talker and was never shy about mixing it up after the whistle.

He had the dominant pro bowl season of 86, where he probably would have won Defensive player of the year if not for LT.

Starting in 87, I think Dexter's dominance as a pass rusher began to wane (though he was still solid) and also Charles Mann began to assert himself and suddenly the line being bandied about was that "Dexter was one dimensional and that Charles was the total package at End".

I never thought that was fair to Dexter. He was much better against the run than he's been given credit for.

Dexter is one of the more underrated players from the 80's.

I feel he certainly belongs on a list of top 10 defensive linemen of that decade.

I thought the fan voting which seems to be partly blamed in the thread for this happening is a recent thing and wasn't present during Dexter's time?

Definitely. If he was coming down from it then it could be a huge disadvantage but if he was high while playing it could help big time.
