    Source: Dez Wells to Maryland

Former Xavier wing Dez Wells is headed to Maryland, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told SNY.tv. Tuesday morning.

Wells chose Maryland over Memphis. He also visited Kentucky and considered Oregon.

It remains unclear if he will be eligible to suit up this season or must sit and wait until 2013-14. If he is cleared to play this year, it would be a huge get for the Terps.

Maryland is also in the hunt for the Harrison Twins, who will announce Oct. 29 from among the Terps, Kentucky, Villanova, Baylor and SMU.

Wells, who averaged 9.8 points last season, was expelled from Xavier Aug. 3 for a violation of the school’s code of student conduct.

Yet last week a Hamilton County (Ohio) grand jury opted not to indict Wells on a sexual assault charge.

If Alex Len sticks around for next season, Terps are in good shape (Len, Cleare, Layman, Smotrycz up front; Wells, Faust, Howard perimeter)

And then, if someone Turgeon/Under Armour can beat out UK for Harrison Twins … WOW. I said Turgeon would be in Final 4 within first 5 years.

    Jeff Goodman ‏@GoodmanCBS

Mark Turgeon can coach -- and Terps are getting players. That's a scary combination, one that will make Maryland nationally relevant again.

Demetrius Hartsfield on Dez Wells: ‘Everybody deserves a second chance’

Dez Wells’s decision to transfer to Maryland has College Park abuzz, and Terrapins linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield is at the epicenter.

Wells, a swingman who played his freshman season for the Xavier basketball team, announced earlier Tuesday that he intended to enroll at Maryland and play for Coach Mark Turgeon. Both Wells and Hartsfield are from Raleigh, N.C., and Hartsfield flashed a wide grin when asked about the news.

“It means a lot,” Hartsfield said. “A lot of people don’t know too much about where we’re from. When you think of Raleigh, you think of N.C. State. Just for him to be up here, another person from that area, I know the ability he has, and I want our basketball team to succeed.”

Hartsfield and freshman receiver Nigel King grew up in Raleigh with Wells. Wizards guard John Wall was a former teammate of Wells at the Word of God Academy, as well.

“We all have connections to this area,” Hartsfield said. “We were all trying to do what we could to get Dezmine here. Him knowing John, me, even Brandon Banks of the Redskins. This past weekend, we were trying to convince him.”

Hartsfield made his pitch to Wells while hanging out with junior guard Pe’Shon Howard and sophomore guard Nick Faust after Saturday’s season-opening win over William & Mary. Oregon, one of Wells’s options, was too far away, Hartsfield said. Just come and become a part of Terp Nation.

Dez Wells is getting screwed, the NCAA needs to make the correct decision on this one and let him play this year.

Turgeon is indeed doing work. A lot of talent, now just got to put the pieces together.

Looking forward to seeing these freshman play this year. Want to see some improvement from Faust and Len too. No reason we can't make the tournament this year.

The Harrison twins are likely going to College Park for Midnight Madness on Oct. 12, according to a source.

Yeah, he gives me so much hope for the future. This thing he's building at UMD is looking beautiful.

If he plays this year, I may have to pony up and go to some games this year, and I mean some real games - not the Colgate type games I've been going to in the past.

Last week's Maryland official injury report had 13 players. This week Terps have 14 on injured list, including 11 out vs. Temple

He may not have sexually assaulted anyone, but he is not an angel. I am a Maryland Alum and love what Turgeon is doing, but lets not make people saints because they put on our jersey. I hope he has learned from his mistakes (the fight against Cincy, for example) and Turgeon turns him into a great player and an even better person. I am very excited for the future of Maryland Basketball under Turgeon and his recruiting efforts...

However, he was proven not guilty in court, and his expulsion was premature he shouldn't be punished by the NCAA for something he never did.

I agree and think he should play this year, but I don't want this young man to be made into a victim. He made some mistakes and should be held accountable...

I think considering the court system said the school f'd up with how they handled it. The NCAA should take that into account and let the kid play this year. Of course we're saying that out loud because he's at Maryland now. BUT....that doesn't make it less true.
