Other experts haven't confirmed this, but this is being floated around on the internet. If true, it would be a silly move for Maryland. Sure, their academics would be good enough for the Big 10, but I don't know how to feel about Maryland basketball competing in the Big 10. And Maryland football would be destroyed, Diggs or no Diggs

Edit: Since the buyout rate for the ACC is ridiculously high, it is highly unlikely that Maryland would bolt the ACC

I wouldn't have objected to the Big 10 move, actually, before Notre Dame began the long, slooooooow process of fully joining the ACC fully -- back when it looked like their independent contract revenues would continue dropping as conference revenues increased -- and before the conference buyout was raised to an incredibly high level. I also noted that Maryland was one of only two ACC schools that voted against raising the buyout to that level.

But now, with all of that done, how would anybody get out? Even with the MAJOR Big 10 Network subscriber money that Maryland would bring to the Big 10 by making the DC/Baltimore region part of Big 10 territory (which not only changes demand patterns but, more importantly, increases the rate each cable service would pay to the Big 10 per subscriber per month), there's no way the buyout would be worth it to bring Maryland over to that conference. Football would eventually find its level and basketball would be fine right out of the gate. Maryland's academics easily qualify it for Big 10 membership, the Big 10 being another conference that makes membership an academic partnership in addition to an athletic one. But the money just wouldn't work out with a $50M buyout.

...Unless it wasn't legally enforceable for a few months, or something... in which case, right now would be the one and only time MD could ever get out at the much lower buyout rate. Or maybe MD would just leave and dare the ACC to sue them for $50M. With the AD $30M in the red thanks to over 15 years of Debbie "F'in" Yow, maybe they think there are some clever financial-shenanigan options on the table to shield the University from paying more than about $15-20M once the dust settles.

Still, it's all very difficult to imagine.

Apparently its Plank who is paying the exit fee. He cashed out $65 million in stock yesterday.

I had been expecting it for a long time -- though I fully admit that once Notre Dame partially committed to the ACC and the buyout went up to $50M over MD's objection, I thought "Well, so much for that idea."

The Maryland I grew up watching is fading away. They're going to take away our Duke rivalry. It's not the same playing Minnesota or Michigan every year.
