Its a great move if you're a Terp alumni, very good for UMD.

That being said, sports-wise I'm not so sure. UMD is a basketball school and the ACC will be the best basketball conference by far with ND/Cuse/Pitt (and now maybe UConn or Louisville?).

Terps will continue to struggle in football, not sure that this move will change much there.

    These are NEW rumors.

There is gonna be more movement. It looked like the Big 12 was in trouble a year ago, but now the ACC looks hurt. These things swing fast.

All I know is that the SEC, BigTen, and Pac12 are here to stay. So, Maryland is in a true power conference for the foreseeable future now.
What would A World Without Lawyers be like?

Is ACC hoops really going to be better than the B1G long term? I'm not so sure. Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin & Michigan are perennial tournament teams. Indiana is back too.

DG: ACC now will accelerate debate over UConn/Louisville (among others) & revisit idea of considering basketball schools (e.g. G'town) too.

    Are you sure?

I have a feeling they're recycling old rumors.

As a UM alum, I don't get the move and the benefit, other than if they see the writing on the wall that the ACC is going to fall apart and getting out when they can.

IMHO, I believe that college sports (read: Football) is moving to 4 major conferences with 16 teams in each. This will allow CFB to have 4 conference winners in a play-off for national championship. This move just looks like another building block to getting there.

The benefit is cash. MD's athletic department is broke.

You really think big teams coming to whoop up on Maryland will fill the stands? I mean there will be a bump the first couple of years because its still new, fresh and exciting but after a few years of getting abused they'll end up with the same attendance they get now. How many people showed up to watch FSU clobber them? Exactly.

No more whining about Duke, looks like.

Better to be an also-ran in the Big Ten than in the ACC. Plus, B1G fans will travel in far greater numbers to College Park than ACC fans will.

The thought is that TV money could double with the move. Even if in-person revenue stayed neutral, that is a big win money wise.

So Maryland athletics is finanically strapped, yet they are still paying retired basketball coach Gary Williams $400,000 per year as a "consultant."

Not a fan of this, I feel we belong in the ACC. But then again the change will be interesting and new competition will be fun to watch. Sort of split 50-50 on this. As long as we stay competitive and have a chance at winning our conference tournament plus deep March Madness runs then I am happy.

I am speaking on basketball terms....football is a joke to me. We won't be good til at least 2015.
