Meaning, if everyone in the ACC gets 25 million a year for TV from football, ND only gets like a fourth of a share. Having ND and WVA would have made the ACC a legit football conference, but they screwed themselves.
WVU was never going to get an invite to the ACC due to their academics.

Major Harris has done a good job over the years explaining why WVU doesn't have the academic resume of some other schools, but the fact remains that they would never fit in with the ACC which is why they were never on the ACC's radar.

Hence why I said it was a mistake. They should have been looking at schools that improve the football makeup of the conference sans academics. I'm all for the fact that the students are "supposedly" there for the education first, but lets be blount and just say that it's OK to have a college in your conference that isn't quite up to academic standards. The ACC isn't the Ivy League and athletics bring in the dollars (especially football) and not academia. They shouldn't have even looked at WVA's academic record and looked at their football record. Now, they'll have to try and keep the conference together. It won't be easy as I really think Florida State has already started "looking" into how MD is able to leave to try and find a greener pasture. Only a matter of time.

No doubt FSU is off to the big 12. SEC wants to expand their footprint, plus it was rumored Florida and other teams may veto FSU. Also, why would teams like Tenn and Ole miss want another football powerhouse to compete with? (thinking out loud)...Too many big boys not enough spots. The sec is loaded and probably does not want FSU.

The mistake was not making enough money with the teams they had. Apparently. Sounds like the BigTen is a much better run company from a money making stand point.

Never in my wildest imagination would I thought Maryland would be the first ACC team to leave. My money was on FSU first, then Clemson.

I was hoping Maryland would leave during the previous round of conference realignment. I don't have any insider info but it seems to me that the Big 10 was putting certain expansion moves in a holding pattern while they tried to land Notre Dame. Once that school moved in a different direction (partially anyway), the Big 10 said screw it and continued with their plans sans ND. It bugs me that Maryland's invitation was gated by ND being goofy, which cost either MD or Under Armour (whoever's paying the exit fee) an extra $30M. But it's ND. What can you do.

Big 10, Under Armour. Under Armour, Big 10. I can tell you two are gonna get along well.

Yeah, this will give Under Armor a vehicle to further compete with Nike. I know Nike is heavily involved with Oregon but I'm not sure how involved they are with the Pac-12. Beyond USC though, Under Armor will have several potential moneymakers to deal with that Nike couldn't dream of.

I just don't want to see Maryland getting obliterated by Penn State every time they play in football.

I always had a soft spot for the terps, especially since I was living in DC when they won the national championship almost a decade ago. Regardless if the numbers make sense, reading some articles about this, I hate the way this went down. The fact none of the players or coaches were brought in about this issue and the decision was made behind closed doors, its sickening. The corruption and greed it exudes is really part of the main reason I haven't been able to deal with college sports like I do professional.

That's a lot of history and rivalries they just threw away. If they say the money is worth it, I believe them. But don't try to convince me it was for any other reason...

as the days have gone on, im ok with it.

If the athletic department is serious about bringing back swimming, track and field, and the other lost varsity programs then its cool.

The athletic program is broke, and has been since the Byrd expansions. The Big 10 at least ensures that the school will now break even. That is a positive in building up the other programs, but also for the football program. This school is a potential power in football. The DC area and state of MD have always had great HS football talent, but the school has never been able to reel them into the university. A lot of it there is a detachment University of Maryland among local people so money will not change that, but the other factor is that the athletic department is broke. At least the money is squared away now so the next step is bringing local people back to UMD. If UMD could keep instate and DC area kids in state, its at least a top 25 program in football because the talent is there. We saw it when Vanderlindin brought mostly local talent in the late 90s/early 2000s which Fridge coached into really good teams. Now is Edsall that guy? I dont know, but I do know that he has a coach on the staff that is doing a great job at keeping players in state. Im blanking on his name, but this coach is the reason why we have Stefon Diggs, and the only reason.

As for basketball, while we lose games with Duke, UNC, and UVA and that sucks, those programs were not our rivals. They dont consider us rivals, and its often been one sided in terms of real hostility. In that regard, it is easy for UMD to leave the conference. UMD were not any of these schools rivals and were always a lone wolf. In the Big 10, I expect Maryland to compete for the top prize sooner rather than later because Turgeon and staff are bringing in good talent after Gary stopped for a decade. The Big 10 has strong programs, but I dont believe there is an equivalence to the Carolina Mafia like in the ACC.

The only athletic program this stinks for is lacrosse, a sport I dont care for that much. The ACC had the best lacrosse teams in the country, and MD were one of the top programs. I dont believe Big 10 lacrosse is strong at all.

At the end, and some thinking, im good with this move.

why would the coaches and players be brought in? Though they are the ones who play, they have nothing to do with major administrative decisions like this.

Its one thing to consult over a head coach, or some changes to the practice fields, etc but they have nothing to do with something like changing conferences. Nothing is corrupt about this, and MD is a unique school in that we have no true rivals.

yeah, I think this is it right here. The ACC catered too much to the Carolina schools and its why GaTech and FSU may potentially leave, as well as Clemson.

The conference had a potential to be big time, but kind of blew it.

and hell to the nah to West Virginia in the ACC. Its not just academics, that school doesnt fit at all with the ACC culturally.
