He seems to run a fully realized program, that's for sure. His program fearlessly pursues blue chip recruits, which was never Gary's way.

But I feel like I should mention that the "goodness" of a coach is very much a product of place and time. In the late 1980s, no Mark Turgeons would have come to Maryland. Maryland's ability to land Turgeon sits squarely upon Gary's shoulders, so IMO the love for Turgeon is awfully hard to separate from Gary. I see his long uphill road in every MD basketball success, even today.

But, on the bright side, he might still be playing in the DC area.

i have to agree with this in both ways.

The irony with Gary Williams is that he used to be a great recruiter, even in his early years in Maryland. He got old and just stopped. But yeah, Turgeron is only at UMD because of what Gary did.

I really believe this program will win a national title in the next 5-8 years.

Gonna watch Maryland vs. George Mason game in a minute. Not interested in the Niners/Rams or Patriots/Dolphins...

Hoping for a good game, this will be a much better test for my Patriots than UVA was. Key for Mason will be limiting Len as much as possible, getting a couple guys hot from beyond the arc. Key for Maryland, controlling the boards, working the in and out game consistently.

Dez Wells showing he can shoot. Outside shooting hasn't been our strong point as of yet this season.

Turnovers and missed free throws are making this a close game...they may even lose because of them

Yup, wore us down and won at the FT line in the 2nd half. Says a lot, Mason is a deep team and played solid D against Len today.

Top #Terps junior target Romelo Trimble of Bishop O'Connell will announce his college decision tomorrow.

    Doug McKinney ‏@FPDougieFresh

If Mark Turgeon is able to land '14ers Romelo Trimble, Dion Wiley/Phil Booth, Dwayne Morgan & another big (& top 20 Roddy Peters in 13) wow!

Maryland adds a four-star guard for their first commitment in 2014.

Mark Turgeon and the Maryland Terrapins continue to accumulate talent. The 2014 class is now off to a good start for Maryland with the addition of Romelo Trimble.

The Arlington (Va.) Bishop O'Connell standout is one of the better scorers in the 2014 class, and he has also been working on developing into a point guard. Trimble, who starred for D.C. Assault during the summer, became the first commitment to Maryland on Thursday morning.

The commitment, which was confirmed by DC Assault coach Damon Handon, is a big one for the Terps as Trimble is currently seen as the No. 57 player in the class.

Also once again this signals what Turgeon and his staff are trying to do by locking down their home base first, and then plucking in some quality prospects from across the country.

Trimble chose Maryland over Cincinnati and Rutgers, and is a huge first commitment in the 2014 class.

IWCC WR Deon Long is the #1 ranked JC player in the nation, and the first #5star since #CamNewton #ReiverNation

Deon Long is actually 21 years old. It only seems like he's 30.

The headliner of this year's Rivals.com junior college Top 100 has lugged around a load of buzz for years. He was a certifiable high school star. At one time, he was the No. 1 prep school player in America. He made a brief stop at the University of New Mexico, and now he's the country's top junior college prospect.

The Iowa Western wide receiver's road to the BCS level wasn't short, but every winding inch of it was decorated with accolades.

Long was the same old Long this season. Sub-4.4 speed? Check. A pair of NJCAA records? Check. A junior college national title? You get the point.

Impressive as his season was, though, it somehow seems even more so when his position coach offers some perspective. Long may be the oldest player in this year's ranking, but it might be wise to hold off on the corny over-the-hill jokes.

"He did all it while only playing in two fourth quarters all year," said Iowa Western offensive coordinator Mike Strohmeier. "He was actually pulled by halftime in most games. I truly believe he will make an immediate impact at Maryland."

There's little reason to question Strohmeier's projection. Long racked up 100 receptions for 1,626 yards and 25 touchdowns this season. All three statistics ranked first among junior college players. Early in the year, he hauled in 20 passes in a single game. His stats only restate everything people knew long ago: Deon Long is a special talent. Always has been. Always will be.

There's a reason he's the first five-star junior college prospect since Cameron Newton.

"He has shown he can do it at all levels," said Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell. "He has taken a very, very roundabout route to college. But we feel he's the kind of player that can come right in at Maryland and be an all-conference difference maker and in a year or two be an NFL first-round talent."
