ACC's new grant of media rights has 'teeth'
Besides exit fee, schools would lose a bundle in TV cash

Pitt's future conference home just got a whole lot more comfortable.
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday that its council of presidents signed a grant of media rights, which effectively should end speculation that any member schools could depart for other leagues.
The agreement guarantees that if any school wishes to leave the conference, its media rights, including all revenue, would stay with the ACC rather than moving with the school to its new conference.
That means that, in addition to paying an estimated $50 million exit fee, any team wishing to depart the ACC could forfeit hundreds of millions of dollars in television revenue. It also makes the league's schools much less desirable to other conferences, since they can't financially benefit from the schools' media rights.
Looks like MD was NOT included as they already gave their notice.
The grant of rights was agreed to unanimously by the 15 schools set to be in the ACC by 2014: 11 current members, plus Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame, which will officially join the conference July 1, and Louisville, which will join in 2014.
Pederson said it was critical that the move was unanimous. The league's vote to up its exit fee was not, with Florida State and Maryland being the dissenters. Maryland, which was not included in the TV rights voting by the presidents, has since announced that it will join the Big Ten in 2014.
I was reading some of the replies in each of the articles and some fans of the ACC really believe MD will come back crawling and begging to get back into the ACC. While I'm glad the ACC did this and it will slow down the "poaching" of teams, MD will not be crawling back to the ACC.
Also, I keep seeing that some are saying Uconn and Cincy are getting screwed. Actually the opposite. The new Big East doesn't have a GOR, and those two schools have been 2nd and 3rd choices in the past. With the new GOR in the ACC, other conferences won't be able to go after FLState, Clemson, UVA, Ga Tech or UNC. Uconn and Cincy now become more shiny options.

Anyone who says that MD is gonna go crawling back to the ACC has their head up their arse. It was an amicable split (minus the whole going to court over the exit fee) and both parties came out satisfied I feel. Like I said in the other thread, I think the ACC got this going as a protection in case Maryland beats them in court.

MD would be getting $17 million a year under the new TV and it would have increased to $20 million a year with the addition of Notre Dame in other sports. Big 10 teams received $25 million just last year and it could go up to $32-$40 million with the additions of MD and Rutgers. They are NOT crawling back.
But like I said, good for the ACC that they are doing something to remain stable. It's a good conference and I really hated that we had to leave, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

However the $20 mil still doesn't take into account any revenue that they'll gain from finally getting their own network, which has to almost certainly be in the pipeline now. Part of what makes the Big10 so filthy rich is their network, and I'm pleased that some ACC members have it in their minds to copy that model for themselves.
I heard they want to launch the ACC network. Heard the SEC is not far behind. All of the major conferences will be getting their own networks soon.
Don't forget, MD and Rutgers also get a travel stipend on top of their share.

Oh I didn't forget. MD and Rutgers got a very good deal when they joined regarding getting the tab on the travels expenses picked up. And last I heard the SEC network was launching in August of next year. I doubt the ACC will have one before then, my guess is that they'll shoot for 2015.

Massachusetts RB Johnathan Thomas commits to Maryland
Maryland snagged its first out-of-area recruit for the class of 2014 on Thursday afternoon when St. John’s Prep (Mass.) running back Johnathan Thomas announced his commitment to the Terrapins.
Listed as a four-star prospect by ESPN.com and three stars by 247sports.com, Thomas is among the state’s top-ranked players, regardless of position. Per ESPNBoston.com, Thomas led the Eagles to the MIAA Division 1 title, rushing for 1,794 yards and 15 touchdowns on 220 carries.
“They envision me being a program changer,” Thomas told ESPNBoston. They’re taking that big step moving into the Big Ten in 2014, and that’s what they said they see in me. And they’re truthful about what. … They said the best player is going to play, so I’m going to be competing to play.”
Thomas joins quarterback Will Ulmer (St. John’s College, Washington D.C.) and offensive lineman Jared Cohen (Mcdonogh School, Owings Mills, Md.) as the current commits for Maryland’s class of 2014.
Big 10 move paying dividends already and we still have a season to go in the ACC.

Marylands 2014 Big10 schedule announced.
Sept. 27 at Indiana
Oct. 4 Ohio State
Oct. 18 Iowa
Oct. 25 at Wisconsin
Nov. 1 at Penn State
Nov. 15 Michigan State
Nov. 22 at Michigan
Nov. 29 Rutgers
Also on the schedule are games @USF Sept 6th and @Temple Sept 20th.
I thought they would split the Michigan/Ohio State games up. We go to Michigan a week before they play Ohio State. So, every other year we play @Michigan @ PennSt @ Indiana and get Ohio State, Michigan St & Rutgers at home and vice versa.
Haha, before we get our asses whipped the rest of the way, we at least get a chance to win in our first conference game by facing Indiana.
I'm getting excited about 2014. I've been watching the Big Ten's Greatest games on the BTN this past week. Watched Michigan St./Wisconsin last night (2007).
One that is coming up is Roy Helu running for 307 yards against Missouri a couple of years ago.

I also like the last week "Rivalry" matchups. I think they did a great job with that.
