I know. That was the point of most of my posts yesterday. MD has positioned themselves to be in a good financial situation and be affiliated with a conference that has a chance to win a national title in football even if MD isn't good enough to win one.

You're right, the conference is much more prestigious now. I'm surprised the ACC didn't pay the B1G to take Maryland off their hands. The anchor has finally been lifted, long live the ACC!!

I remember hearing the same things when the Big East started its long, slow slide into oblivion.

As schools in major markets walked: "Who cares -- we'll replace those guys and be stronger."

When the replacements brought in their smaller local markets: "Doesn't matter, they're somehow better for the conference."

On the prospect of giving schools partial memberships: "It's not a sign of disrespect or weakness."

When other conferences started laying real plans for dedicated cable networks: "We don't need that."

When a ton of their teams made the Big Dance but payouts remained smaller than the big boys': "See? It's, uh... working."

And finally, when more schools left and reality could no longer be denied: "I wish I could have ditched this leaky tub too."

For some schools in that mess, it was too late. And after all those warning signs, too. A good lesson for any school that was paying attention at the time.

The ACC probably can't fall as far as the Big East, in part because there are fewer slots available to fill in more stable conferences. But there ARE more stable conferences, and some ACC schools (i.e., the ones with options) are eyeing them hungrily. Losing those schools likely would cement the ACC into that TV-dollar second tier permanently. Maryland proves that those itchy option-rich schools can jump, just as soon as they know how much money they need to beg/borrow/steal to get out.

In light of all that, if the ACC truly "couldn't care less about losing Maryland," then the conference deserves the bad times it has coming. If they're smart -- jury's out on that one so far -- then they're very, very worried about losing Maryland.

I think the ACC is a little more stable than the Big East, because the ACC doesn't have "basketball only" schools. This hurt the BE, when all the Catholic schools decided to bail when the dual BB/FB schools started leaving. Even though the BE has been plucking CUSA, Sunbelt and some Division 1-AA teams, it will utltimately fail. The ACC will survive because in addition to their basketball program being as strong as the BE, their football is stronger than the BE ever was. I really think the ACC will be like CUSA, MAC, MW and Sunbelt conferences as far as football goes. It saddens me as a 30+ year fan of the ACC. If FSU and Miami leave, the ACC is in trouble.

The ACC hitched their horse to the North Carolina carriage, and they will die by it.
I swear, I've seen more Tar Heel or NCST football games on in Baltimore than I have Terps games. Christ, I've seen just as much Towson football on TV as I have terps. The ACC only cares about getting exposure to the teams in NC.
What're you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem!

Big 10 talk buzzing again. #UVA being mentioned often as likely to join. Georgia Tech still in the mix. #UNC, the big domino, has an offer.

Makes you wonder if Coach K's 'rivalry' comments after the U-Md. game weren't necessarily directed at the #Terps. He knows #ACC is tenuous

Feels like the UNC/UVA and whoever else to the BIG 10 rumors have been going on forever. This is what it feels like for me (more about just making a decision, if in fact any discussions are going on at UVA about leaving).

I heard the MD to the BigTen rumors for years before it happened. And it happened suddenly.

Jeff had an interesting point about K's comments. They may well have been directed at UNC or possibly other ACC members. Conference realignment is not over, and the ACC is no longer the conference driving the timing of realignment.

Also, special gratitude to Buford who set me straight earlier about UNC really being tied more to NCState than to Duke. An excellent point, and one that offers further explanations for K's prickly demeanor.

Do you think the VA legislature will let UVA walk without Va Tech? They strong armed the ACC into taking Va Tech when a school like Syracuse would have been more financially beneficial for the conference. Whether or not that worked out is a different discussion, but I wonder if the state won't step in to keep them together again. Which would really suck for UVA and may suck for Va Tech who could maybe jump to the Big12 or SEC.

Looks like it's gonna be a typical let down loss after a big win. Seems to happen to most teams. I hope they can come back but other than Logan, no one is playing well on offense.

This is a typical Maryland game. They play like **** offensively in a lot of games.

Dez Wells for the most part to me has been overrated.

I'm beginning to wonder if this team is poorly coached or uncoachable? They continue to do the same dumb **** every single game.

They are all Freshman and Sophomores. I think it's just youth.

we need a PG and this team doesn't have one. When Peshon/Faust come in, there is no reason to play their jumpshot. They are terrible and also can't dribble past you
