Default Boston Herald: Packers' Nick Collins out for season

    http://news.bostonherald.com/sports/...osition=recent

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins will see a spinal specialist in the coming weeks to figure out the best treatment for his injured neck, but in the meantime his season is over.

Collins was given the bad news Monday after an overnight stay in a Charlotte, N.C., hospital.

"It’s something he’s definitely going to miss the season over," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday afternoon. "He just got back. He just came back to our facility from Dr. (Pat) McKenzie’s office with the consultation that they had for the last hour or so. This is where we are."

The circumstances of Collins' neck injury seemed very similar to Josh Wilson where he was going for a tackle and got a face full of pelvis.

That's s big loss. He's a turnover machine for them.

Man, sucks for you guys. Who's taking over, Peprah?

He's the only guy I'd put in there. M.D. Jennings barely made the team, and after that is CB/S Jarret Bush who's mostly a special teams ace. Fortunately we choose our safeties to be able to play all the safety assignments (so that Collins and whoever don't have to switch sides based on the offensive alignment and don't give away their assignments), which means that Burnett or Peprah should be able to fill that position despite both being designated as Strong Safeties. I would imagine if you were to designate on FS and one SS, Burnett would probably get Collins' FS spot as he's faster and better in coverage and Peprah would take SS as he's more of a hard-hitter you can put in the box

edit: actually, one other possible scenario is to put Woodson back at safety and let Williams and Shields take care of the corner spots. I wouldn't be surprised to see that in the base 3-4 defense, but when in nickel, I figure we'd be better off having Peprah on the field than Pat Lee, Jarret Bush, or Davon House who'd replace Woodson at the nickel position.

Interesting. Thanks for the perspective here.

Do you see Woodson playing some FS, or are they going to keep him closer to the LOS, where he's had the most success in recent years? From your post above, seems like the rest of the secondary will just be business as usual.

I just edited that post to add a scenario for Woodson playing Safety. I think they've actually used that package some last year since we have an elite corner in Williams and Shields had earned his spot on the field as a cover-corner.

Yeah, I could see that working.
