On this day 29th Nov in 2001, former Beatles guitarist George Harrison died in Los Angeles of lung cancer, aged 58. Following the breakup of The Beatles, Harrison had a successful career as a solo artist and later as part of the Traveling Wilburys. George was the youngest member of The Beatles (16 when he joined), and went on to release the acclaimed triple album, All Things Must Pass, in 1970.

The Traveling Wilbury's were perhaps the greatest supergroup, IMO. Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Lynne!

30th Nov 1969, The Monkees made what would be their last live appearance (for 15 years) when they played at The Oakland Coliseum, California.

The dream was over. The previous year their long-running TV show had been canceled, the band having become tired of scripts which they deemed monotonous and stale. http://mrtrpt.com/1gu

1st Dec 1964, The Who played the first of 22 consecutive Tuesday night gigs at The Marquee Club in London. The band were paid £50 for each gig.

Keith Moon once said The Marquee was the only place that had any influence, where managers and promoters and the press could see you. They had a very discerning audience; Moon admitted that playing at the marquee helped The Who develop their musical ideas. The Marquee helped The Who (and many other bands) find their feet. "Maximum R&B" said the poster for these Who gigs — and it was.

On this day in 2005, the MBE medal that John Lennon returned to the Queen was found in a royal vault at St James' Palace. Lennon returned his medal in November, 1969 with an accompanying letter, stating, "Your Majesty, I am returning my MBE as a protest against Britain's involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. With Love, John Lennon." Historians were calling for the medal to be put on public display.

On this day in 1967, The Doors appeared at the New Haven Arena in New Haven, Connecticut. Before the show, a policeman found singer Jim Morrison making out with an 18-year-old girl in a backstage shower and, after an argument, the policeman sprayed Mace in Morrison’s face.

Once on stage, Morrison tells the story of the backstage episode and starts taunting the police, who drag him off the stage and arrest him. The crowd riots, leaving the venue in disarray. Many are arrested. Later, over 100 protestors gathered at the police station in demonstration and more arrests were made. http://mrtrpt.com/1hl
